REFLECTION PAPER DAY 2
As a part of the Business and Society Seminar, on Tuesday, November 14th 2017, my

classmates and I attended lectures at the Department of Environment which was presented by

John Bothwell, the Chamber of Commerce presented by Wil Pineau, and the Economics &

Statistics Office presented by Adolphus Laidlow.

All of the lectures where very informative, however in particular, I have learned about the

coral bleaching. According to Cayman Islands Environmental Centre (2017), The Mission of

the Department of Environment is to facilitate responsible management and sustainable use of

the natural environment and the natural resources of the Cayman Islands; through environmental

protection and conservation, wise use, scientific research and public education (para.1). Mr.

Bothwell advised that the biggest problem is climate change. I understood that coral bleaching is

caused due to change in ocean temperature. The algae leaves the coral when the water becomes

too warm because of climate change, which is the leading cause of coral bleaching. Pollution,

overexpose to sunlight and extreme low tides are also other causes of coral bleaching.

What I have learned about the coral reefs is related to the topic of Business and

Society because, as a society we need to help to protect our habitat. The society needs to provide

a respected habitat for sea creatures. Specifically for tourists that visit the Cayman Islands for

diving, we also need to ensure that the reefs are taken care of, in order to maintain, boost, and

generate revenue for our countrys tourism industry.

This topic is related to my reading in the official text of the book, specifically under

climate change as I was informed by Mr. Bothwell that the leading cause for coral bleaching is

the climate change. Lawrence & Weber (2017) wrote, A critically important challenge facing

the world community is climate change (p.191). Once the ocean water becomes too warm, then

the corals are majorly affected by bleaching. Overall, we as the society need to care more about

our environment.
