SKITTLES TERM PROJECT Natoshia Iversen

Math 1040

Introduction

Each student in the class was assigned to purchase one 2.17 ounce bag of regular Skittles candy.
The student then separated the different colors of candy and counted how many of each color
there were. (Only whole candies were counted) The results were emailed to the professor to be
used as the data for the Term Project. Only students who reported their findings by September
30th were included in the compiled data. 30 bags of candy were reported. 1,804 candies were
counted.

A Pie Chart shows the proportion of each color within the total candies counted. The data from
the bags of candy reported shows the bags to be within about 14 candies of each other. The
colors appear to be randomly placed in the bag. The most issued color was Green. The least
issued color was Yellow. The total number of candies I counted in my bag were 59. My bag had
more Orange than any other color. Yellow was the least.

The Histogram Chart is skewed to the right. The graphs appear to match what I thought about
the data. The overall comparisons are very close.

A Hypothesis test is a statistic test that is used to determine whether there is enough evidence
in a sample of data to infer that a certain condition is true for the entire population. A
hypothesis is a statement made about opposing guesses of a population: the Null Hypothesis
(Ho) and the Alternative Hypothesis (H1). The Null hypothesis is the statement being tested.
The Alternative Hypothesis is the statement you want to be able to prove is true; usually stated
as being larger than or less than and never equal to.

Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that 20% of all the candies are red

Ho : p = 0.20

H1 : p 0.20

Two tail test

= 0.05
/2 = 0.025
P-value = 0.2892

There is not sufficient evidence to warrant rejection of the claim that 20 % of all the skittles
candies are red.

Use a 0.01 significance level to test the claim that the mean number of candies in a bag of
skittles is 55.

Ho : = 55

H1 : 55

Two tail test

/2 = 0.005
T = 9.28

There is not sufficient evidence to warrant the rejection of the claim that the mean number of
candies in 2.17 oz. bag of skittles is 55.

REFLECT
Before an interval estimate can be made, you must first make sure a few conditions are met.
First, you need to make sure the sample used is a simple random sample. Second, the sample
needs to be sufficiently large enough. A sample can usually be considered sufficiently large
enough if it included at least 10 successes and 10 failures. As with Interval Estimates,
Hypothesis tests also have conditions that need to be met. However, they vary depending on the
type of test that you are doing. For a Proportion test, the sample used must be a simple random
sample and have a population greater than 10. For a sample T-test, the sample needs to be greater
than 30, the population must be greater than 10, and the sample must be a simple random one. To
improve a sampling method, the larger the sample is, the more accurate it is going to be.
Additionally, the more random the sample is, the more likely you are to get diverse answers and
be more accurate in relation to the population. From the statistical research we have done, we can
conclude that the mean number of the skittles per bag is more than 55. We can also conclude that
20% of the skittles are red.

Final Reflection

What Have I Learned As a Result of This Project?

Statistics is math. Its like comparing Apples to Oranges. What Ive learned in my previous math

classes wasnt applicable though. I was starting from scratch. Statistics has its own formulas for

solving problems. Im kidding when I say, What dumb, smart guy came up with this? I

actually find it fascinating. It depends on what youre trying to solve for as to what formula you

have to use. I like studying with other people because I can be both, student and teacher. I made

new friends because I worked with other students in the class. I had an introduction to working

with Excel. With more practice, I could be pretty good at it. I could definitely use that ability at

my work. No matter what, its my responsibility to get my homework done. I have set my focus

on getting my Bachlers degree. This class challenged me but I kept learning.
