Ignitability Test

Material General
The test determines the ignitability of a vertically mounted test specimen
Burner when a small flame is directly applied to its surface and / or one of its
edges. No other heat source is used. A separate procedure is given for
products which melt and shrink from the applied flame which is used only
if this is required by national regulations and only if the specimen does
Filter paper not ignite in the primary test.
The test is used for assessing a construction product to classes B, C, D
and E, and floor coverings to classes BFL, CFL, DFL and EFL. (see informa-
tion folder for full detail of the classification system).

Test apparatus
The apparatus consists of a combustion chamber in which is mounted a
specimen support system capable of allowing specimens to be fixed in
position. The ignition source consists of a small flame tilted at an angle
of 45 to the specimen. It is mounted on a sliding mechanism such that it
can be presented to the specimen and removed in one fluid movement.
The flame is approximately the size of a match flame with a heat output
of 0,8 kW.
A number of specimen holders are used to allow the specimen to be
tested on its surface, bottom edge or vertical edge and a larger size for
melting and shrinking materials. The test specimen holders are of dimen-
sions to incorporate specimens of 250 mm high by 90 mm wide for the
normal test and 250 mm high and 180 mm wide for melting and shrink-
ing materials. Below the specimen is positioned a small tray in which
is placed two layers of filter paper to determine the potential of flaming
droplets or particles to spread fire.

Test procedure

The flame is applied to the surface of the test specimen for 15 s or 30 s,

dependant upon the Euroclass required, see tables 1 and 2. Where, in
practice, the edge of the product can be exposed to fire then the flame
is additionally applied to the edge of the test specimen. For multilayer
products of thickness >10 mm the flame is applied to the side edge of
each material layer.
The specimen is observed after removal of the flame to determine wheth-
er there is any flame spread to a distance of 150 mm, above the point
of flame application, within a specified time period, see tables 1 and
2 for details.
If, when the flame is applied, it does not remain in contact with the test
specimen for the entire period of flame application i.e. the specimen
melts or shrinks away from the flame, and the product does not ignite,
then the product can be tested in a modified manner using the moving
specimen holder. The flame is applied for a 5 s period and removed.
It is then reapplied after 3 s to the edge of the area that has melted or
shrunk away. The criteria for this part of the test are based on the produc-
tion of flaming droplets which ignite the filter paper which is positioned
beneath the apparatus. Again details of the performance criteria are
given in the tables.

Number of test specimens

6 specimens (3 in each direction) are tested in each relevant flame ap-

plication position. This will depend upon if the two faces of the product
are different and either can be exposed to fire if there are areas of the
product that are distinctly different, each area should be tested
if the product is multilayered
if uncovered edges can be exposed to fire
Further tests may be needed for classification purposes.
From this it can be seen that the number of tests for each product has to
be decided on an individual basis.
