SOIL

ARTHROPODS
Azizah, Mayra, Bahi,

Arthropods that
live in an organic
vegetable
garden.
4 classes of arthropods
find out how many did we
found!
Soil Arthropods is a really important
role to the key of healthy plants & the
soil itself. Types of arthropods are
important to see each functions &
characteristic. The reason of this
experiment is to know the surpose,
types, and function of soil arthropods.
The big focus is to estimate the

number of arthropods in order to

analyse the quality of the soil.

Hypothesis

Our prediction is that, because of

the experiment attempts are in
the school garden, the
arthropods won't be as much. My
other prediction is that the soil
will only have 4 classes of
arthropods, because crustacean
is impossible to be in a soil
Materials;
notebook; to note all the
informations that matters.
camera; to have a more
clear footage & to have
prove.
shovel
ruler
cleaning tools
soil scoops

Method;
- First; research more about what i could found
in the garden (internet, book, an science article
- second; start observing the soil really closely
- Dig the soil with the plot size of 30 x 30 x 30
cm ( L, W, D)
- Take some pictures/ use a zoom glass for
clearer footage
- always prepare my note books to note all the
deets.
Independent
- The location of experiment; our group
find an easier way to do the
experiment! from our science article,
the attempt of experiment are in a
urban farming. We change it to our
school's vegetable garden.
- Soil; i will have 2 soil which is the
school garden's soil & natural soil
dependent
selbairaV

We want to measure 4 classes of

arthropods in the soil of our school's
vegetable garden.
Control
We will keep everything the same,
except we'll have 2 soil; garden + natural
soil.

natural soil Garden soil

RESULT & DISCUSSION

We had 2 days experiment attempt, and the first

day went well. On the first day we observe the
natural soil, and first we used soil scoops, then we
found out that it's hard, so we dig in using digging
shovel. Before we dig we use a ruler to measure
30 x 30 x 30. After digging we used the soil
scoops to scrape on the soil to find the
arthropods. 5 - 10 minutes finding, we finally found
a lot of worms, also big ants, and insect. We know
we should take pictures of the arthropods but
some of them move really quickly. We found
chilopods & insects.
Chilopods; ground worms (7)
Insects; Ants (13) , Termite (2) , Green insect (1),
On the second day we found less
arthropods than the first day. We also
wanted to attempt the experiment with
the garden soil instead of the natural soil
on the 2nd day (which is the same spot as
the 1st day) So we kind of changed the
control variable. So we changed the
control variable from comparing the soil
to the day/time of experiment.

What we found in the second day is;

4 types of ants

We only found 1 class of arthropods which

is insect and only 1 species of insects.
This is the table when we were collecting our
data. These are the results of our dependent
variable, what we wanted to measure.

The similarity of day 1 and 2 was that we didnt

found any diplopods and arachnids arthropods.
We did choose garden for the place where we
did our 2 days experiment.
Explaination = in day one, we found more
Arthropods because we found the
differences from day one and day two, which
was the time. In day 2 the time we started to do
the Experimentwas earlier, which was
wenesday 10:00 am, and monday (day 2) 8:00
am.
day 2 we didn't find any chilopods, but we
found some insects, all of them were ants
but but some of them have different colors
and the sizes. For the sizes there are the
small and the big ants. We found an ant with
a different color, the ant is black but has
bluish shades.
day one we were most likely found ants, but
different then day 2, we found a green
insect we don't really now what's the name of
the insect but the color was green. and we
found 2 termites on day 1. if we didn't find
chilopods on day 2 we found 2 chilopods on day
1 instead. There were worms, but their
sizes differenciate them, 5 were the regular size
of worms, not big and not small as well, and 2
for the tiny worms.
CONCLUSION
The conclusion is arachnids are rarely
found in soil diplopods as well, the most
class found in soils chilopods & insects. our
observation was fine and we all were
cooperating together, although we have
changed in the control variable because we
only have 2 days of experiment. those days
we used for our observation in natural soil,
and our plan was in the garden soil as well.
but we could only completed one place so
it's the change. we did 2 days experiment in
one place. on those days we mostly like to
find insects, and most of the insects were
ants with different characteristics like the
colors and the sizes. otherwise, we found
less chilopods on day one and none from
day 2.
from our prediction the results were pretty similar
because we didn't really find many arthropods
while observing. our second prediction
was wrong, not all of our prediction that there
would be four of arthropods that we've
selected for our prediction, we only found two
arthropods which were insects and chilopods.
