This exercise is designed to

be played with a metronome.

Out And About

This exercise is designed to work the players independence and rotating wrist motion. It also
gives the player another way to play through the arpeggios of all 12 major scales.

Play the exercise at a very comfortable tempo to ensure the wrist are achieving maximum
rotating capacity. Start with the mallets in comfortable starting point about 9-12 inches off the
bars. The Cirst stroke should not require a prep but simply initiate the outside mallets (1/4).
The next stroke is where there needs to be a good wrist rotation as well as control. The stoke
must be controlled in order to attack the next beat in time with a good quality of sound. The
last beat in the phrase (4 note phrases) require a good wrist rotation again as well as control
like before. Repeat these ideas through all 12 major scale arpeggios. Make sure to play at
different tempos and dynamics.

Experiment with the outsides playing forte and the insides (2/3) playing piano. Have fun with
it and remember to stay relaxed and always strive to achieve a good quality of sound.
