New Year's Eve

In the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Eve (also known as Old Year's Day or Saint Sylvester's
Day in many countries), the last day of the year, is on December 31 which is the seventh day of
the Christmas season. In many countries, New Year's Eve is celebrated at evening social
gatherings, where many people dance, eat, drink alcoholic beverages, and watch or light
fireworks to mark the new year.
Traditions in Ecuador New Years Eve
People make big scarecrow-like dolls called aos viejos often of the characters they dislike
or of well-known people from the past year. They will set on fire in the streets at midnight on 31st
December. This is Ecuadorian practice to symbolically bid a goodbye to the old year.

"Viudas" are very insistent and will block the streets and dance in front of cars until someone
pays their toll. They tend to start first thing in the morning of New Year's Eve and continue
throughout the day.

Fireworks: If you were trying to sleep through the New Year celebrations, you may have some
success until mid-night. The boom of fireworks is hard to ignore. Some say the fireworks ward
off the bad spirits.

Twelve Grapes at Midnight: Eating 12 grapes at midnight is said to bring good luck for the
coming year. Ecuadorians eat twelve grapes upon the stroke of midnight, each representative
of one wish for each month of the coming year.

Colored Panties: There is a superstition that if you wear yellow underwear on New Year's Eve
you will have increased prosperity in the coming year. Red underwear means you will find love.

Suitcase Around the Block: If you plan to travel in the coming year, you are supposed to run
around the block with a suitcase at midnight to enjoy success during your travels.

Put some money in a shoe. To attract wealth and prosperity in the New Year Ecuadorians
make sure to put a bill inside a shoe. The bigger the bill the better. If you cant put it in a shoe at
least make sure you have some money in your pocket, as its believed that money attracts
money.

Clean House. Getting rid of old clothes, toys and other items helps set the stage in the
Ecuadorian household for Dec. 31st. Clearing out all the old or unused items not only allows for
them to be repurposed but clears out old energy making room for the new. Some even believe
that all clothes must be washed in the house to start the new year off fresh and clean

Midnight : Many traditions revolve around the stroke of midnight, which heralds the new
year. At both public and private gatherings, people count down the last 10 seconds of the
old year. At the stroke of midnight, many people toast to the new year with a glass of
champagne.

Some people grab a loved one or a friendly stranger and bestow the first kiss of the year.

Many towns and cities put on a show with fireworks and provide noisemakers, meant
to scare off evil spirits. Many Americans band together and sing "Auld Lang Syne," an
Irish song bidding farewell to the old year.

Food :Some Americans eat certain foods either at New Year's Eve parties or on New
Year's Day to bring good luck. European-Americans often eat pork.

The famous countdown is made in the city from New York at midnight in Times Square,
where thousands of people gather to see a sphere of faceted glass that descends at
twelve o'clock night.

The tradition dates back to 1907. People sing "Auld Lang Syne", poem written by Scottish
Robert Burns and adapted to a ancient folk melody, to mark the beginning of the New
Year.

A widespread practice is to provide with champagne for the New Year. Another is kissing
to a loved one at twelve o'clock at night at the beginning of New Year.

Many towns and cities in the United States celebrate this day with parades and football

En el calendario gregoriano, la vspera de Ao Nuevo (tambin conocido como el da del ao viejo o
el da de San Silvestre en muchos pases), el ltimo da del ao es el 31 de diciembre, que es el
sptimo da de la temporada navidea. En muchos pases, la Nochevieja se celebra en las reuniones
sociales nocturnas, donde muchas personas bailan, comen, beben bebidas alcohlicas y miran o
encienden fuegos artificiales para celebrar el ao nuevo.

Las personas hacen muecas grandes como espantapjaros llamadas "aos viejos", a menudo de

Bragas de colores: existe la supersticin de que si usas ropa interior amarilla en la vspera de Ao
Nuevo, tendrs una mayor prosperidad en el prximo ao. La ropa interior roja significa que
encontrars el amor
Maleta alrededor del bloque: si planeas viajar el prximo ao, se supone que debes correr alrededor
del bloque con una maleta a la medianoche para disfrutar del xito durante tus viajes.
Pon algo de dinero en un zapato. Para atraer riqueza y prosperidad en el Ao Nuevo, los ecuatorianos
se aseguran de poner una factura dentro de un zapato. Cuanto mayor sea la factura, mejor. Si no
puede ponerlo en un zapato, al menos asegrese de tener algo de dinero en el bolsillo, ya que se cree
que el dinero atrae dinero.
Casa limpia. Deshacerse de ropa vieja, juguetes y otros artculos ayuda a preparar el
escenario en la casa ecuatoriana para el 31 de diciembre. Limpiar todos los elementos viejos o sin
usar no solo permite que se reutilicen, sino que tambin elimina la vieja energa, haciendo espacio
