Old Tyre Market Survey

Objective: To understand old tyre market in Delhi, NCR.

Location: Delhi, NCR (National Capital Region)

Area visited: Noida

Karampura, Delhi
Punjabi Bagh, Transport Nagar
Area near Kirti Nagar
Mayapuri (Automobile scrap market)
Vasant kunj, Delhi
Jhandewalan, Karol bagh

During market survey I visited tyre vendors, garage owners, kabadi wala, and some new tyre shops
(Goodyear, CEAT).

Observations:
Most of the vendors are traders. Tyres are sold according its condition. They dont sell it on
the basis of tyre weight.

Tyre is used for at least 10 times by process of retreading. Retreading is environment

friendly. When the existing tyres are made ready for further use, it also reduces carbon
dioxide emission and saves millions of gallons of oil which is required to manufacture new
tyres.

If tyres not in condition for retreading, tyres are shredded, metal wire and rubber is
separated in case of radial tyres. Rubber is used in footwear industry. Rubber is also used for
retreading by melting it.

Some part of tyre scrap is used for pyrolysis which gives by-product as carbon black,
activated carbon, solid residue (char) and pyrolysis oil.

Some part of tyre scrap is used to burn in brick kilns as a substitute to coal in outskirts of
Delhi. Burning tyre in brick kilns is hazardous to environment because it emits several
harmful gases like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter.
Brick kilns emit more smoke than any other normal factory because here burning process
takes long time to solidify the bricks.

A company named Tinna rubber and infrastructure limited, Delhi using tyre scrap to make
tyre crumb and hi tensile reclaim rubber which has different applications. It is also
environment friendly.

We need to explore this area more to understand the market.
