How has increased access to technology affected business?

Bhalla, A. S., & James, D. D. (1988). New technologies and development: Experiences in

"technology blending" Boulder: L. Rienner, 1988.

Coriat presents some of the findings of a series of computerization studies done on small-

to medium-sized shoe businesses and manufacturers in 1983; the studies were sponsored

by the Technology-Employment-Work Program. He explains that shoe manufacturers

were relieved by the new technologies being developed. Laser cutting and automatic

stitching were major developments in the shoe industry, making for faster production.

These advancements helped solve the issue of the cutting and stitching processes being

too slow. Cutting the material by hand with scissors or a blade, and then stitching it

together by hand with a needle is not as efficient as machines that can do both.

Kooser, A. C. (n.d.). How Does Technology Improve a Business? Retrieved October 24, 2017,

from http://smallbusiness.chron.com/technology-improve-business-2188.html

According to Kooser, advancement in technology has improved productivity in

businesses around the world, and has turned small businesses into large ones.

Considering technology before the 2000s was simple and ineffective compared to that of

today, companies used to face a variety of issues that are no longer so common.

Computers were slow when they first came out, and getting in contact with somebody

was often not an instantaneous action, due to the use of landlines, payphones, and pagers.

Kooser claims that communication has improved due to cell phones, as they contain

access to phone, text message, internet, and e-mail all in a handheld device. Employees

are available for both individual communication and group teleconferencing with little

complications. Computers have also gotten faster over the years, making software and

applications more useful. Kooser also mentions improvements in marketing and customer

service as bi-products of increased access to technology.
