Stages OF growth and development
Basic divisions of life
I.Pre-natal stage from conception-birth
II.Period of Infancy
1.Neonatal- 1-28days or 1st 4 weeks of life
2.Formal Infancy-29days- 1 year
III. Early childhood
1. Toddler- 1 to 3 yrs
2.Pre-school- 4- 6 yrs
IV.Middle childhood
1. School Age 7-12 yrs
V. Late Childhood
1. Pre-Adolescent -11-13 yrs
2. Adolecent- 12-18-21 yrs
VI. Adulthood
1.Early Adulthood- 21-40 yrs
V.Middle Age- 40-65 yrs
VI.Old Age- 65 yrs above

Pre-natal period
Conception to birth
Human body parts are formed
Inherited characteristics from parents are imparted to the child

Infancy period
Birth to 2 years old
Basic physical and psychological patters begin to developed.
Rudiments of right and wrong
Tantrums to call attention
Oral Stage:
Enjoys sucking fingers and toes, and puts into mouth anything he happens to take hold of.

Early childhood
2 to 6 years old.
Preschool Age
Exploratory and inquisitive period
Social Relationships: Mixes and plays with a children of his age group.
The childs tendency to imitate the actions of elders is reflected in his play activities.
Bowel and bladder training
Early childhood (continuation)
At the end of this period:
Child can walk and run with steadiness.
Talk understandably
Follow simple directions
Take a bath and dress himself alone by himself.

Late childhood
6 to 11 years
Elementary school period
Begins to develop feelings of independence
Peer groups
Period of strong individual relationship and group relations
Relates to others but is critical of others.
Interested in the opposite sex( infatuation)

Puberty stage
12-15 years
Early high school period
Urge of sex begins to assert itself rapidly.
Capable of procreation at age 15.
Physical and physiological changes:
Pubic hair growth
Changes in height and weight
Hair in arms and legs in boys
Breast changes and menstruation in girls

Early adolescent
Puberty to 17 years
Late high school period
Rapid sex maturation
Some young people get married at this time
Development of life ambitions and aspirations

Late adolescents
18 to 21 years old
Child is in college preparing for professional or vocational careers
Out of school are entering or finding jobs in preparation for independent life.
Development of intellectual and social skills

Early adulthood
21 to 40 years old
Employment
Courtship and marriage
Parenthood
Stage of productive years:
Higher studies may be pursued
Middle age
40-65 years
An individual has achieved most of his aspirations in life:
Well-established home and family
Stable and lucrative job or business
Political achievements
Preparation for retirement
Physical and physiological functions begin to decline

Old age
Starts at age 65 years old
Generally strong, energitic and mentally alert
Period of retirement
Rapid declination of physical and physiological functions
Characterized by ailments
Painfull adjustments:
1. Death of a spouse
2. Solitute as children now have their own homes or jobs in far places
3. Inadequate financial resources.
4. Inability to perform home chores.
5. Unpleasant relationships with kin and neighbors.
