Present the state of technology available on this (how its production can be enhanced what

strategies based on literature; Various aspects bioreactor configuration; nutrients, substrate,

Lee, S. J., Lee, J. H., Yang, X. et al. (2017). Re-utilization of waste glycerol for continuous
production of bioethanol by immobilized Enterobacter aerogenes. Journal of Cleaner Production,
161, 757-764.

I. Introduction
a. Bioethanol production from glycerol is cheaper than conventional bioethanol
production from corn.
b. Glycerol carbon source anaerobic fermentation
c. Enterobacter aerogenes is capable of higher levels of ethanol production
compared to other microbes, and is a class 1 microorganism (meaning safer).
d. Immobilized microbial cells using alginate because its cheap
e. The study focuses on bioethanol production by immobilized cells in an alginate
matrix in a CSTR through fermentation with waste glycerol as feed stock.
II. Materials and methods
a. Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC 29007
b. The cells were cultured at 37 degrees Celsius
c. 30 experiments were conducted to optimize the culture media for ethanol
production. data points were fitted to a function to obtain the maximum amount
of ethanol production for the designed experiment.
d. Cell immobilization was done using sodium alginate beads about 1 mm in ID
were produced then stored at 4 degrees Celsius to increase hardness.
e. Feed was based on the highest ethanol produced 12 g/L waste glycerol, 6.5 g/L
peptone, 3.8 g/L ammonium sulfate and 2.1 g/L citrate dehydrate.
f. Total volume of the CSTR is 2.3 L. Upon adding the beads, 1.6 L of void volume.
Outlet line was placed at the 2 L volume point of the reactor, therefore the volume
is constant at 2 L.
