0 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Volunteering activities in Malaysia are on the rise. It is widely known that well
equipped, well-trained and well-supported volunteers make strong, vibrant communities. A
recent study showed that over 74.6% of a sampling of Malaysian youths indicated that they
were involved with volunteering activities and programme (Turiman et al.,2011). The history
of volunteerism in Malaysia did not differ much from that of other socities. cAs a research we
are interested to conduct a research about University Tun Hussien Onn (UTHM) students
willingness in doing volunteering services. It began with individuals commitment to religious
as well as charitable altruism, as an act in response to human tragedies caused by wars, political
conflicts or economic crisis (Siti Hawa, 2002). There is now public interest in volunteerism but
more can be done to make it part of our mainstream culture. The majority of people who join
volunteer activities are retirees; the younger generation and professionals face constraints such
as time if they want to be fully involved in volunteer activities (Siti Hawa, 2002). Development
agencies are urged to work together to provide a conducive educational environment for young
people to be guided and to learn, as well as to be creative and innovative through constant
interaction with the community (Azimi, Turiman & Ezhar, 2002).

Malaysian government agencies and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) have put in

considerable effort to promote volunteerism. Generally, many Malaysians are aware of and
agree with the benefits of being involved in volunteering activities. Nevertheless, there is still
a considerable segment of the population that does not participate in volunteering activities
(Azizan, 1995). While there are numerous benefits of volunteerism such as helping to promote
active learning, provide experience that will strengthen commitment to civic participation,
expand educational experience, and improve community service, there are many challenges
that volunteers need to overcome (Terry, 2005; Lee et al., 2007; Barbara et al., 2011; Willems
et al., 2012; Kauthar et al., 2013).

Volunteers serve as important reservoirs of knowledge for development programs and can
help ensure that development-related advocacy campaigns are relevant and legitimate. By
participating in volunteering or social activism, or both, people can be empowered with
confidence, skills, and knowledge necessary to effect changes in their world. Increasingly,
these volunteers make the difference for many in our community between just getting by and
fully enjoying life.
Studies have shown that active volunteers are influenced by their beliefs in a cause. They
constantly seek out opportunities to volunteer, and they sustain their volunteer activities over
extended periods of time. The Malaysian youth community is multicultural and reflects the
larger population. It comprises about 57 % Malay, 25 % Chinese, 7 % Indian, and 10.1 % non-
citizen and indigenous population (Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sport). Although previous
research has put forward some general propositions about youth involvement in volunteerism,
research related to youths beliefs in volunteerism in Malaysia is still lacking. Hence this study
has been undertaken to examine the extent to which beliefs underpin youth engagement in
volunteerism. In this study, the focus is on youth volunteers and how their beliefs affect the
rate of volunteerism.
Unfortunately, the number of college or university students who volunteer is declining
(Sergent & Sedlacek, 1990). College students often perceive that they do not have time to
volunteer and solely need to focus on their studies. Garland (1985) noted that many students
were primarily interested in activities which would further their potential to be employed or to
enter the graduate/professional program of their choice. However, based on roughly
observation among UTHMs students the willingness of students to join is on the contrary.
There are several programme that conducted in UTHM that related with volunteerism such as
MYCORPS, Volunteer Malaysia Programme etc. Volunteer Malaysia Programme Volunteer
Malaysia Programme involved 1500 UTHM students and volunteers, as well as 500 members
of the local community. It aimed to raise awareness on volunteerism and strengthen university-
community ties. Activities included Public Art Movement, Green Team, Beach and
Underwater Clean Up, and War on Dengue. UTHM provided transportation for the programme.
A sum of RM42, 000.00 was allocated and the total cost, in-kind and cash, was RM113,200.00.
Last but not least, our aim in this research is to examine the extent to which university students
participate in volunteering and how students perceive the motivations and benefits associated
with volunteering.

2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

This research is undertaken to find the following problems:
1. Students lack time in doing volunteering work instead they prioritize their projects and
assignments

2. Students had to spend their own money to involve in volunteer activities

3. Student attracted to join activities that provide recognition acknowledgements

1. Students lack time in doing volunteering work instead they prioritize their projects
and assignments

Students in dilemma doing some volunteering services because they did not know either they
should do the volunteering work or to prioritize their projects and assignment. Some student is
being able to balance their academic or social time but some of student are not. Student should
be able to do both because student must know and learn how to manage their time either to
study or to do social things. Sometimes volunteering gives you the opportunity to develop your
social skill. Even though you may have a lot of things going on, it is important to remind
yourself that your academic work should always come first when it is come to prioritizing your
time.

2. Students had to spend their own money to involve in volunteer activities

Some volunteering services need to come out with financial, student have to spend their own
pocket money to join the volunteerism. Not every student can join the activities because there
is a student whose depends on their scholarship or student loan to continue their study. Student
have to think carefully before they want to involve on it because it will affect their financial.
But mostly, some of the volunteering activities was sponsor or support by institution or
organizations for student.

3. Student attracted to join activities that provide recognition acknowledgement

Most students hoping after graduating they will end up with their dream job right out of the
gate, but some job or career needs an experience person. Having experience in the field before
graduating is extremely important. Some of the student think that they only want to join
activities with recognition only such as in UTHM they use SMAP to record all the student
activities. There is a student that does not want to join the activities because some of the
university not offered that. But they do not know volunteering allows students to interact with
communities outside their immediate circle and students gain invaluable experience, whether
working for popular organizations or directly with organizations on campus that have
meaningful and positive effects on the community and help students build skills and their
resumes for future employment.

Good.
3.0 RESEARCH QUESTION

1. What do you understand by volunteering services? X (Do UTHM students understand about
volunteering services?)
2. Why do you prefer to join in volunteering services? X (What are the factors that contribute to
UTHM students joining the volunteering services?)
3. If you are not interested in volunteering services why? X

4.0 OBJECTIVES

This research is done to archive this following objective;

1. To study whether UTHM students understand about volunteering services.

2. To find out the factor that contribute UTHM students on joining volunteering services.
OK.

5.0 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The findings from this research will add valuable information to the existing data about the
factors that contribute to the willingness in doing volunteerism among UTHM students. Based
on the students perspective, the study can also get to know the benefits that students will gain
from volunteering and what the organizers can offer them in return. Thus it will help students
to be more aware of any volunteering programme that were offered so theyll know which
program fit their schedule due to students commitment. Based on organizers perspective, the
findings in this study help to understand better on the level of students commitment towards
volunteerism in University of Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. This type of understanding is crucial
to the survival and effectiveness of NGOs, voluntary associations and other non-profit
organisations which depend a great deal on volunteers especially the university students. The
findings can further give an idea to all volunteers enthusiasts to curb the situation if there is
lack of volunteering from students. Further actions are needed in helping to improve the
effectiveness of the programme which will attract participants in being a volunteer by having
feedback from the respondents.

6.0 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study investigates the willingness in doing volunteerism among UTHM students.
Although this research was carefully prepared, there are some more unavoidable limitations.
The study is only limited to undergraduates from UTHM. This is because the time constrains
faced from author and there are no transportation afforded in order for expanding the subject
of respondents. In addition, the methodology used is by questionnaires and interview, thus the
answers given may not be an honest answer as there might be people who chose their answer
simply by referring to what their friends had chosen. In addition to that, the targets might even
flippantly complete the test given just to finish it quick and leave. As a result, the final data
obtained may not be entirely accurate and trustworthy. Moreover, the methods used to obtained
data are by online response thus there might be lack of data collected due to respondent that
are facing internet problems.
OK.
7.0 METHODOLOGY

This research was conducted by questionnaire and interview. A total of 200 (too many.
50 should be enough) questionnaire were distributed to student in UTHM by sharing a links
using WhatsApp application. The questionnaires used dichotomous question type. This type of
question within questionnaire give two options to the respondent, (YES/NO) and provided open
ended responses for additional comments.

How do you select the respondents? Random? Selected? Explain.

Hence, for the interview method, a student from MPP UTHM were interviewed to get
their understanding and opinions about volunteering services in UTHM. During the interviews,
leaner was asked to share their opinion on what they understood about volunteering and the
factor that contribute student to join volunteering services.

How do you plan to interview him/her? Telephone conversation? Face to face? By

appointment? Random pick of the MPP representative? Explain.
