Lesson Idea Name: Learning the Scientific Method
Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 2

Content Standard Addressed: S2CS7. Students will understand important features of the
process of scientific inquiry.

Students will apply the following to inquiry learning practices:

a. Scientists use a common language with precise definitions of terms to make it easier to
communicate their observations to each other.
3.Tools such as thermometers, rulers and balances often give more information about things than can
be obtained by just observing things without help.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Lesson idea implementation: In this lesson, students will be introduced to the scientific method. At this
point, students will already have an understanding of science, and experimenting to find a result, so in this
lesson, students will find out the reason for the scientific method, its order, importance, and how it is used.
Instructor will begin the lesson by introducing concepts of experimentation to find a result, asking the class
for examples as an informal assessment of their prior knowledge.
Next, instructor will introduce the video, asking students to remember one important piece of information
from the video to discuss after.
Once the video is complete, the class will engage in a group discussion about the topics covered in the video.
Extensions for this lesson include notebook entries of information gained, or direct implementation and
practice where students will practice the rules of the scientific method by conducting experiments and
observing objects around the school.

Importance of technology: Multimedia tools are important for this project because it allows the students to
see visual examples of the concepts discussed. The scientific method is a rather abstract concept, so visuals
can be useful for student understanding. This lesson can take place without the multimedia tools, however it
is simply more fun and engaging with them.

Inspiration (optional): I was inspired by the video examples used in class.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Some issues regarding internet privacy and safety when it comes to
student-created video content, is ensuring that student information remains private. It is important to make
parents and administrators aware of when students will create projects that could potentially reveal faces,
locations, or any other sensitive information. It is important to teach students how to protect their internet
safety by never stating their first and last names together, never showing faces of classmates that do not have
parental permission, or information that could help predators locate the school or the location of filming.
