Events Near You..3 I was driving to a Key Club event the other day and passed by a convoy of
firefighters. Passing each engine, I saw weary men and women who had obviously
given their all to the raging fires that were in our area. I noticed while passing that
the trucks were from places far and wide. Ramona, Vista, San Diego, Camp
Pendleton. There were even trucks from places that I did not recognize; towns that
were so far away from my day to day life, that I have never been through them.

Key Club When we got to a stoplight on the same road, I noticed several more fire trucks
headed the other way. Heading towards the flames, with a sense of determination
and purpose. Looking to the destination of the trucks that were traveling with me,
2017- they were headed to a community park, a pseudo command center. There were
probably another 30 trucks there in varying stages of rest or refuel to begin the fight
2018 again.
I thought about these men and women. I felt their dedication to their job. During
these times they are asked to step into harms way. They are asked to confront
flames that are 20 to 30 feet tall. They are asked to save whatever and whomever
they can. They are asked to do this not only once but repeatedly for one fire. The
engines that were coming back with my car were going to have to return after their
break to fight again. I felt a huge sense of appreciation; not only for their efforts in
combating the flames, but for their sense of volunteerism to their community.
I continued to my meeting. As part of the meeting there were several breakout
groups. Within these small groups we spoke about why we were passionate about
Key Club. In listening to my fellow members, I found myself finding the same sense
of pride for the volunteerism and dedication to good that I found when I thought
about the firefighters. I realized as Key Club members and volunteers it is our efforts
that put good into the world. And just as one fire fighter cannot battle the flames by
himself, we also need support to do the most good. We need to rely on our Kiwanis
Family help us knock down our flames. We will continue to succeed, just as the
firefighters, because as always.
We are better together.
