Rational + Plan

Rational
In this unit I plan to use a mix of direct instruction with assisted notes and inquiry based learning
in order to enable students to develop logical reasoning. It is my firm belief that mathematics is
like many things in that it is practice based, thus throughout my lesson plans you will see much
of the allocated class time used on homework rather than on instruction, i believe that so long
as it is supervised practice with an occasional helping hand this will be much more useful than
straight direct instruction. Throughout the unit you will see a variety of videos and online
sources as well, these are in order to both give brief breaks, and in order to spur student
interest.

Plan
The unit will be divided into 6 lessons
1. Inductive Reasoning and the Validity of Conjectures
2. Counterexamples & Deductive Reasoning
3. Invalid Proofs and Reasoning to Solve Problems
4. Using Reasoning to Solve Puzzles and Games
5. Pretest
6. Chapter Test
These lessons are based on the chapters in the textbook and are explained in depth in each
lesson plan. To see the schedule refer to the course outline.

Assessment Plan
Catholic Central High School has its entire math department use the same tests thus the
chapter test will be the main form of assessment based on policy. This being said 5% of a
student's grade is based on completion of the assignments, and the other 5% is based on
pretest marks. Furthermore due to the immense amount of work time, much of the formative
assessment will take place while observing work time.
