Locating in a neighbourhood with diversity groups of user ranging


from workers, elders, tourists and families, SS 2 Medan Selera serves
its purpose to fulfil their basic need. Despite SS 2 are filled with other
food outlets, the food court never fails to attract consumer to have
their meal there. This analysis will break down the impact of
diversity consumers on the food court and how the it attracts more
consumer to revisit.

TYPOLOGY

Typology of food court allows a mixture of different choices of food co-exist in a same
space unlike typical shophouses which seperate the food outlet according to their type
such as chinese food and western, main course and dessert.

Difference from other food outlet in shophouses, SS 2 food court multiple entrances which
are convenience for different groups of community.

Open plan of food courts allows different arrangement of seatings which fulfil the need of
individual consumer or consumer who visit in a group.

Transition from outdoor to indoor shows the middle part of food court always cramp with
crowd as because of easy access to food stall. This situation created a more peaceful and
spacious area in the front and back of the food court. The different in spatial quality gives
the consumer more choices in selecting their seats.

SHOPHOUSES FOOD COURT

Openness of stall in food court creates physical and visual connectivity between food
consumer and the stall owner, blurring the barrier between private and public space.

SENSES

Due to the diversity in community, stalls in SS 2 Medan Selera serve food of different races
and country. Hence, a lot of different way of food preparation methods creating a mixture
of food scent and smoke stimulating the taste bud of consumer. Various type of lighting
also used to decorate the stall front in order to attract the consumer visually.
CONCLUSION

Affordable and food flavour once act as the main consideration when
consumer choosing their food. As the country facing modernization,
more and more food outlets with luxury design and nice
atmosphere slowly became the basic requirement for dining. Despite
facing these competition, SS 2 Medan Selera still manage to grab the
attention of consumer and become a place to bring the community
together. This interpretation shows that through good placemaking
and responses to community need, a food court can be a successful
role model for design of food outlet in the future.
