LO2 For this learning objective you worked on planning and production

What did you In order to produce review shows as part of Unit 9: Characteristics and
learn from Contexts in Creative Media Production I had to appropriately plan and
your prepare each of my individual productions. This would allow me to
understand the elements that must be prepared for my shows to come
planning/
together and be completed. When planning I learned of the significance of

continues?

As I have only ever been part of the audience not production crew on
radio sports shows, the concept was relatively new to me. I needed to
research the platform in order to successfull y. My research reveal ed that it
would be beneficial to script my production. Whilst live broadcasts are not
scripted, they often have ques and info sheets that allow the present ers to
speak fluentl y. My show is not a live broadcast, therefore, I can script it to
produce a fluent show. The task was to produce a 2-minute extract from the
show, therefore I had to plan accordingly. When preparing my radio review
show I learned of all the equipment that is required for the show to be
recorded fluentl y.

When
listing who and how the equipment is used I learned how each of the
pieces of equipment function in a radio show. For example, I learned how
the mixing console is used to control microphone volume, music settings
and all other elements and inputs in radio. In addition to this, my planning
helped to clarify the roles within the production of my show. Whilst I am
producing the radio by myself, the roles within the production had to be
clear in order for the project to be successful. For example, the sound
engineer is responsible for the recording/technical side of the production. In
order for this role to be fulfilled, I had to ensure that I and Steve Morano
(Sound Engineers) were compet ent with the software and hardware. This
meant I had to learn how to use the radio suite effectivel y to make high
quality recordings. Also within planning I honed my skills in scriptwriting.
How will this Having a better understanding of my planning will allow me to be better

your production work more closely which will help me manage my time better
and produce higher quality work. Learning of all the equipment required in

What
genres/forma
ts have you
chosen and
why?
The specialism I
chose to research in Unit 9: Characteristics and Contexts in Creative Media
Production is sports journalism. In order to display a confident understanding
of my specialism I chose to produce a radio review show, a TV Studio review
show and a highlight reel. The radio show is a sports focused discussion show
which will cover recent sporting events and results. The sport I will focus on is
football my radio show will be open-format and will talk about premier
league fixtures and significant events in the gameweek. This will make my
radio show appear more professional and relevant. When researching into
the radio platform and discussion format I analysed various successful sports
radio stations. I analysed radio stations such as talkSPORT and the content
they cover, as well as the manner they convey the information. This would
allow me to prepare my radio show in a similar format and appropriately
portray the format. The radio format is a crucial element of sports journalism
that typifies how sports discussion can be spread to the demographic. The
second format I chose to focus on is TV Studio Reviews. TV Studio reviews
are similar to Radio reviews, although they make use of visual ques and
elements. I chose it because it is a significant format that is dominant within
sports journalism. The format produces the majority of revenue for sports
channels such as sk y sports, therefore it is crucial to understand how it
functions. By focusing on it I will be able to produce work in the format,
which will mean I understand the mainstream formats of sports journalism
better. In addition to this, TV Studio Reviews are heavily cameras based.
They commonly feature multiple camera angles and require competence
in cinematography; which I take great interest in. Focusing on something
that is reliant on camerawork will allow me to hone my skills in both
journalism and cinematography, which will give me a broader skill set in
future projects. The highlight reel is an opportunity for me to practice my
editing skills. This format is a showcase of significant events in a sports match
(football in my case). The format requires skilful editing in which I will cut
irrelevant clips and produce a short film that evaluates a match and
displays important skills and goals. Focusing on this would allow me to
further improve my editing which is a widely applicabl e skill in television and
film. Furthermore, it will allow me to gain experience in filming football
matches and producing commentary for it, which will in turn help me
improve as a sports journalist.
How much I completed a large portion of work outside of lessons. For Unit 9:
work did you Characteristics and Contexts in Creative Media Production our task is to
complete research into various formats within our specialism. I began and completed
most of the research in my lessons, which meant my workload was reduced
outside of the
over an extended period. Whilst this was partially effective, I could have
lessons?
devoted more time to complete the research within lessons. This would
leave me with more time to begin planning my productions. I was able to
complete research in my own time, although it was completed whilst I was
planning my productions. This meant that I had not aligned all my
information appropriately, slightly reducing the quality of my planning. I
completed the majority of my planning outside of lessons, as I was able to
fully devote myself for longer periods.

The filming stage of my productions was done in lesson times, as it was when
I had access to filming facilities, equipment and crew. This made effective
use of my time as I had sufficient time to record multiple takes with my crew
and to make full use of the facilities. I filmed my TV Studio Review in the TV
Studio in college during lessons. This was convenient as Jamie Filby and Joe
Maine were also in lesson, and therefore available to partake in filming. In
addition to this, I had priority in the studio as I was in lesson time. This was
useful as I had the opportunity to reshoot if required. However. Shooting in
college meant that I had to work within the time restraints of the college
day.
All I edited all my work outside of lessons at home. As the version of Premiere
Pro at home is different to that on college computers, I was unable to
continue editing on the college computers. Whilst this delayed the editing
process, I was able to dedicate my time to complete the edits outside of
lessons.
What issues A major issue I faced when planning was gaining access to the radio suite
did you for my radio show. When I was planning the radio suite was being installed
encount er and calibrated. This meant that I could not plan when I was going to film
and was reliant on the suite to be finished in time. In order to overcome this I
whilst
planned and recorded an alternative take using equipment at home. This
planning and would mean that if the radio suite was not ready in time I would still have

them?
How did you The filming and editing processes were fairly well executed. I recorded the

filming and The software was intuitive and did not take much time to understand. This
made the recording process easier as I knew how to record and how to

take much easier as the equipment allowed me to mute my mic, which
gave me time to process my words. Editing the radio show was also fairly
fluent. I used Adobe Audition, which is specialist audio editing software.
Using a multitrack I was able to cut, mix, adjust and morph my clips, being
able to use the waveform as a visual aid.

The waveform view meant I could edit that by terms of volume control,
noise reduction or otherwise and be able to see what I needed to edit or
remove.
The tools on Audition are quite complex, but when they are learned they
can be the most effective tools to edit audio. This was particularly helpful in
the editing of the radio show as I had a small amount of background noise
(see problems encountered) that I needed to remove. The tools allowed
me to do this without compromising the quality much. Audition also had
some useful presets. When editing the 'call' in my clip I used a preset that
makes audio sound like a phone call. This preset is customizable and
allowed me to produce a very realistic phone call effect.

I recorded the TV Review show in the TV Studio. A convention of TV studio

shows is mulitple camera angles, so I had a three camera setup. This was
fairly simple to set up as the camera were readily available and the studio
has various sockets to charge the cameras. The filming was fluid and was
execut ed efficientl y. We only recorded 3 takes until we were happy. This
meant that I had more time for editing.

However, there was an inconsistency with the settings on the cameras. This
meant that the colour grading is different on one camera angle.
The editing process went quite well.

I was able to allign the audio to the footage fairly easily. I found that by
alligning all the footage to the same point I could cut and edit it with
correct chronology.

RED circled elements are alligned footage of camera angles

I used premiere pro to edit the footage. Premiere pro had all the necesary
tools for me to cut my footage and add effects. The tools allowed me to
creat e an overlay for my show, ultra key the green scren to add footage
and for me to edit a highlight reel into my clip. It was very easy to use, and I
completed the edit at home.
Did you A significant problem I encountered was when recording the TV Studio
encount er review. One of the cameras had a different setting which gave the footage
any problems a different colour grade. This meant that one camera angle looked like it
had different lighting.

overcome
them?

To overcome this I tried to colour correct the footage to match the others.
However, this affected the quality of the ultra key (green screen effect ).
Because of this I had to only slightly colour grade it. The result is better but
still noticable.
Another issue I had was that the microphone I used to record the audio for
the TV show corrupted. This was our primary source of audio and was the
best quality. The cameras' inbuilt microphones were recording backup
audio. I was able to select the camera with the best quality audio to use in
my final piece. Whilst it is not the best quality, the audio is still good and
acceptable to use in my piece.

The biggest Issue I encountered was when I was recording my highlight reel.
I had to record a football match and edit it into a highlight reel. A lack of
organisation meant that I only had one possible match to record. WHen the
time came to record the match it was cancelled due to extreme weather
conditions. This meant that i could no longer record the highlight reel. Due
to the deadline, I could not rearrange the filming portionm, therefore I will
not have a highlight reel in a seperate clip. However, I edited significant
match events in my TV studio review. This demonstrates my understanding
of highlight reels, as well as my ability to produce them.
How do you My radio show is quite well done. The high energy I convey to the audience

products?
I am impressed with the quality of my TV studio review. In my show I highlight
crucial conventions of TV studio reviews in both the presentation and the
technical aspects. The final product is comparable to that of professional
studio reviews. However, the graphic overlay could be improved. It is
effective but two dimensional.
Two improve it I could scuplt my graphics based on that of BBC SPORT and
Sky Sports

Instead of having one block colour I could have a fade or visual effect on
the overlay. This would increase the professional aesthetic of the edit. In
addition to this, the green screen key could be improved. The green screen
had shadows and creases which affectied the quality of the key process.
The resultant green screen loks a bit shoddy due to this sharp edges around
the presenters, Which makes the piece look less professional.
