Since co-sponsoring UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) Resolution 30/1 in October 2015, the Sti Lankan government has made encouraging progress, including the return of some military held land, the initiation of a constitutional reform process and an improved environment for civil society and human rights defenders. The UK worked hard to ensure Resolution 30/1 included a call for international involvement in Sri Lanka's accountability process, which will be crucial in ensuring that process is credible and equitable. At the UNHRC this June, the UK reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of the resolution. We also called on Sri Lanka to release more civilian land occupied by the military, repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act and ensure effective consultations and witness protection for its transitional justice mechanisms. The UK is also providing Sri Lanka with £6.6m of Conflict Stability and Security Fund funding over three years, to include support for police reform and training, ‘community policing and demining in the north of the country.
