Disasters claim a terrible toll in human
lives and suffering around the world,
and have increasingly been identified as a
major threat to sustainable development
and to the Millennium Development
Goals. To substantially reduce disaster
losses a holistic approach to Disaster
Management is needed, balancing its
three main processes – Disaster Risk
Reduction, Response and Recovery. To
meet this, the University of Copenha-
gen, in close cooperation with Lund
University, offers a Master of Disaster
Management.
The Master of Disaster Management is
designed in accordance to the Hyogo
Framework for Action, to provide
professionals working with Disaster
Programme
Master of Disaster Management is
a research-based post-graduate pro-
gramme.
The full programme consists of three
modules:
• Core module with four mandatory
courses (20 ECTS);
• Advanced module with one manda-
tory and three elective short courses.
(20 ECTS);
• Thesis module (20 ECTS), which
could be expanded with an optional
internship depending on the student’s
prior working experience and inter-
ests.

The master’s programme will give each
participant the ability to customise
their studies in alignment with his/her
interests and profession. The Master
of Disaster Management can be taken
as a one-year full- time programme or
in modules over three years. It is also
possible to enrol for single modules and
short courses.

The curriculum combines professional
and hands-on skills with a multidiscipli-
nary academic understanding.
The graduates of the programme
will be able to:
• Analyse, evaluate, and manage the
dynamic factors of disasters on an
individual, societal or company level,
locally and globally.
• Work theoretically, strategically and
operationally in all three main proc-
esses of Disaster Management – and
understand how these are intercon-
nected.
• Make qualified decisions that are
based on an identification and analy-
sis of the vulnerabilities, needs and
capacities of affected individuals and
societies.
• Work, act and communicate in multi-
cultural and interdisciplinary teams
under different conditions.
• Collect, document and analyse infor-
mation regarding risks, humanitarian
needs, lessons learned etc.
