HBO’s Boardwalk Empire—Based on a book of the
same name by Nelson Johnson, Terrence Winter
(Emmy-award winning writer of The Sopranos) and
Martin Scorsese bring the story of Atlantic City
corruption to the small screen. Hype is high as
this series premieres this September with a cast of
heavy hitters including Steve Buscemi as the main
character, Nucky Thompson. It’s reported that $50
million was spent on the Boardwalk Empire pilot,
so big things are expected. Editor’s Tip: The show

He just never realized
he’d find those
answers by always
pretending to be
somebody else.

“To me, acting is that sense of flight,” Morrow

muses. “It’s somewhat indelible and akin to being a
kid. I play with my [9-year-old] daughter all the time
and she’s so instantly caught up in these worlds of
imagination and there’s something very liberating
about that. Because, in a way, you connect with your-
self. It forces you to be present.”
“You know,” he adds. “They say that the present
moment is the point in which time touches infinity.

Case Report
Because Rob Morrow plays persistent
criminal defense attorney Jimmy Brogan
in ABC’s The Whole Truth, we stole a
few moments of his time and investigated
more hidden truths:
d!: TV shows you’re most impressed with at
the moment?
RM: Entourage, Glee and Hung. I even
wrote a fan letter to the folks at Hung
because it sometimes reminds me of
Northern Exposure—the idiosyn-
cratic nature of the characters and their
thankfulness to their world.
d!: Best movie you’ve seen lately?
RM: The indie film Kisses.
d!: Best music in your CD player or iPod?
RM: Jay-Z, Beyoncé and John Mayer.
d!: Actor/actress capturing your attention?
RM: Al Pacino and Alison Pill.
d!: What are you most confident about?
RM: Acting.
d!: What do you value most in life?
RM: My family.
d!: The best thing about being a dad?
RM: “That unconditional look of love
and joy—when I get that from my
daughter, that’s pretty amazing. It’s a
pretty euphoric experience.”

These days, Morrow is being given plenty of op-
portunities to be just that. The actor, whose face
may be more recognizable than his name, is at the
helm of the much-anticipated new Jerry Bruck-
heimer series The Whole Truth, which premieres
September 22nd on ABC. In it, he morphs into a
passionate defense attorney who culls from a Hell’s
Kitchen upbringing to balance justice.
It’s just the kind of innovative show you’d expect
to find Morrow, to star in—thought-provoking and
a bit soul-stirring. But the seasoned actor, who’s
now headlined a number of popular hit series—
and starred in the films Quiz Show and The Bucket
List—says that, early on, he never really knew he
wanted to act.
“Looking back, I could see the writing on the
wall, but I was never conscious of it until I was 15,”
he reflects. “I was watching the movie Grease with
some friends and somehow, in the middle of the
film, I had this epiphany. And I walked out of the
movie theater and said to my friend, ‘You know, ‘I
am going to be an actor!’ as if I had always planned
on it.”
Two years later, at just 17, Morrow boldly left his
Miami home and ventured to New York. He honed
his craft with stage work, all the while connecting
with peers. But when Hollywood beckoned, even
Morrow could not have predicted just how well the
career gods would shine down on him.
The year was 1990 and the show that changed
everything: Northern Exposure, the quirky CBS
hit about a befuddled big-dreamin’ doc (Morrow)
forced to offer medical care to the citizens of bu-
colic Cicely, Alaska. The series, which recently cel-
ebrated its 20-year anniversary—and nabbed an
Emmy for Best Drama in 1992 as well as racking
up two additional Golden Globe Awards and the
coveted Peabody Award to boot—ran for five years
and continues to sport a cult following.
“In the ’90s, I think TV started to take from the
movies and one of the most unusual things about
Northern Exposure was that it was shot on loca-
tion—not New York or L.A.—so it had that land-
scape, which became a character in the show,”
Morrow says. “You can still see that kind of influ-
ence in TV today—it’s more of a cinematic expe-
rience and the numbers are raised really high for
those of us in TV. Now, we have to work really hard
to make a show look like a ‘movie,’ even though we
have an eighth of the time.”
After the series bowed, Morrow went behind
the camera, directing episodes of the hit shows
Oz, Joan of Arcadia and the edgy Showtime crime
series Street Time, in which he also starred. But
something always kept bringing him back in front
of the lens where success always embraced him,
especially with Numb3rs in 2005, an instant hit for
CBS. After show bowed earlier this year, Morrow
admits that he wasn’t even looking to do another
series. But then The Whole Truth “literally came
from nowhere.”
The outing pairs Morrow with Maura Tierney,
who delivers a steely turn as a prosecutor/law
school alum. The twist? The series illuminates how
two sides of the law—defense and prosecution—
actually build a case.
“It’s very intelligent,” he says of the show.
But so is Morrow. And his outside interests often
mirror his conversations—meaningful. For many
years now, he’s been on the Board of Directors for
Project ALS, which was co-founded by Jenifer Est-
ess, who was diagnosed with ALS (formerly known
as Lou Gehrig’s Disease), in 1997 and died of the
illness seven years ago.
“Jenifer was pretty much told to cash out—you
know, max out your credit cards and enjoy the rest
of your time,” Morrow reflects. “But instead of do-

ing that and going off to a mountaintop, she decid-
ed to form an organization to try to find a cure.”
Interestingly enough, Morrow and Estess met
when Morrow, early in his acting career, helped
launch, along with Marisa Tomei and others, an
indie New York Theater Company dubbed Naked
Angels. (It still thrives today.) At the time, he says
the enterprise was “about autonomy and having a
place for actors to work … where you could actually
learn and experiment.” Estess managed the com-
pany. After her diagnoses and the birth of Project
ALS, Morrow came on board and lent his support.
(A CBS TV movie was eventually made chronicling
Estess’ journey.) To date, the organization has
raised more than $50 million for support, services
and research for ALS.
“You can go either way,” Morrow notes about
the surprising emotional curveballs life can throw.
“You can become jaded and cynical, or you can be-
come grateful. Being part of Project ALS makes me
that much more grateful for the gifts I get, and to
be really conscious of those gifts.
“You know,” he adds. “I’m living a good life,
not just from a career and ‘success’ point of view,
but from a spiritual point of view, and a physical
point of view. I don’t take for granted my health;
good health—it’s the greatest gift to get.”

A Prophet
This gripping French prison drama

19 year-old Arab, serving a six-year
sentence. Alone and vulnerable,
he becomes enthrall to César (a
terrifying Niels Arestrup), the brutal
Corsican gang leader who controls
the prison. He compels Malik to
murder another prisoner set to
testify against the mob, which
requires Malik to learn the delicate
art of hiding a razor blade in his
mouth. With this harrowing act,
his education and rise to power
begins. At two-and-a-half grueling
hours, A Prophet immerses viewers
in Malik’s amoral and unforgiving
prison world, where César enlists
him to perform illicit errands and
commit more murders that will
complete his transformation.
A Prophet does not traffic in
mythmaking a la The Godfather,
nor does it glorify or glamorize
Malik’s crimes a la Scarface. It is
filmed with a gritty naturalistic
authenticity. It makes HBO’s Oz

MacGruber
MacGruber manages to pull off
the seemingly impossible mission
of expanding a 90-second SNL
sketch into a feature film. In
those MacGruber sketches, Will
Forte’s mullet-maned hero “makes
life-saving inventions out of
household materials” but always
gets sidetracked as the bomb he’s
defusing ticks down to its last 20
seconds. Blown up for the big
screen, MacGruber finds a bigger
payoff whenever the film sidetracks
from the standard-issue ‘80s action
movie plot, as witness MacGruber’s
deranged revenge fantasies toward
a driver who hurled a drive-by insult
at his car. The film’s secret weapon
is Val Kilmer as a megalomaniacal
villain with a stolen Russian nuclear
warhead and a grudge against
MacGruber. MacGruber’s somewhat
less than A-team includes Vicki
St. Elmo (SNL’s Kristen Wiig), and
straight arrow Lieutenant Piper
(Ryan Phillippe), who begins to
question MacGruber’s unorthodox
tactics. MacGruber may not set
the world on fire, but the insanely
committed Forte, will do anything,
no matter how obscene, to
complete his mission. Rated R.
Robin Hood
Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe, the
director and star of Oscar-winning
Gladiator, have done justice to
this legend. This Robin Hood is
a historically suspect origin story
about how Robin became an outlaw.
Russell Crowe stars as Robin
Longstride, who faithfully fought
alongside Richard the Lionhearted
in the Crusades and returns to
England a new man, literally. He
assumes the identity of a fallen
comrade, nobleman Robert Loxley,
and is asked to return Loxley’s
sword to his father in Nottingham.
Once there, he is persuaded to
continue the deception, much to
the initial displeasure of Loxley’s
widow, Marion (Cate Blanchett).
Robin becomes embroiled in the
political machinations of Richard’s
treacherous and taxing brother
John, who becomes king. The
Sheriff (Matthew Macfayden) takes a
back seat to the film’s real villain, the
traitorous Sir Godfrey (Mark Strong).
Robin Hood delivers on spectacular
piercing action set pieces, there’s
hearty comic relief in Robin’s three
comrades, and Crowe commands
the screen as an honest, brave, and
naïve Robin. Rated PG-13.

A 1992 study conducted by neuroscientist Richard Haier
at the University of CA–Irvine found that playing the game
Tetris could make brains more efficient. Brain scans showed
that as players became more skilled at spinning and
stacking blocks, portions of the brain used less glucose.
Additionally, the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque,
NM, found that Tetris players developed a thicker cortex—
which studies have indicated might show higher intelligence
