REACTIONS

* If the support prevents the

translation of body in a
given direction, then a force
is developed on the body in
that direction.
* If the rotation is
prevented a moment is
exerted on the body.
REAL EXAMPLES

Roller Cable

Fixed Support
Hinge
Example 1: Draw the Free Body Diagram of the uniform beam shown below, the
beam has a mass of 100 Kg?
Example 2: two smooth pipes, each one has a mass of 300 kg, are supported by the
forked tines of the tractor. Draw free body diagram for each pipe and find the
reactions?
F.B.D of Pipe A

F.B.D of Pipe B
F.B.D of total Body
Example 3: Draw the Free Body Diagram of the following Structures:
SOLUTION:
DISTRIBUTED LOAD
WHAT IS A DISTRIBUTED LOAD?

A LOAD APPLIED ACROSS A LENGTH

OR AREA INSTEAD OF AT ONE POINT.
DISTRIBUTED LOAD

The location of the resultant force is at

the center of mass of the distributed load.
DISTRIBUTED LOAD

For a triangular distributed load, the

magnitude of the resultant force is the
area of the triangle
DISTRIBUTED LOAD
Example 4: The Beam ABC, Built into wall at A and supported by a cable at C,
carried a distributed load over part of its length as shown in figure the weight of the
beam is 70-lb/ft . Draw the F.B.D. of the beam?
