1. SYSTEM OVERVIEW
FOX515T is positioned as high-end Next Generation Multiplexer complementing the portfolio of:
• FOX515: Utility Access-MUX with trunk-capacity up to STM-1 providing a wide range of user
interfaces for legacy, data and voice. Integrated teleprotection functionality and other utility
specific features fit all Access-requirements of utilities.
• FOX515X: Extends FOX515’s trunk-capacity smoothly to STM-4&16 and adds strong GFP based
Ethernet / IP functionality including routing to the network.
• FOX515M: Connects via STM-1 and provides 4 E1 and 4 Ethernet-ports for small installations in
remote premises.
FOX515T combines in an unseen way the transport of mission critical TDM – based services like
teleprotection, high capacity PDH & SDH – connections and Ethernet – services.
All members of the FOX515-family are managed by FOXMAN, the SNMP-based unified Network
management System of ABB. Its open architecture allows integrating with 3rd Network management
Systems either north- or south-bound. Graphical network representation and Point & Click operation
make FOXMAN the ideal solution for managing TDM- & Ethernet-Services at the access- and transport –
level.
The FOX515T consists of a shelf (compatible with 19” or ETSI racks) with room for up to twenty-one
plug-in modules. The modules consist of a number of different types comprising two CPU/DXC carrying
service modules, eight service modules, eight connector modules, two miscellaneous modules and a
hot-swappable managed fan module. In addition there is room for a cable management area that
handles both the optical fibres and the copper cables. The front view in shown in the figure below.
The dedicated CPU/DXC modules consist of TDM matrix, Ethernet Crossbar, System controller and SDH
interfaces. The service modules consist of a number of SDH, Ethernet and PDH interfaces. The different
modules have additional miscellaneous physical interfaces for the CPU/DXC service modules. The
connector modules have the physical interface for the PDH, SDH and Ethernet copper interfaces.

a ring or line network topology. The FOX515T is used to drop traffic in the different sites.
permitted without written authorization.
The FOX515T will typically be deployed in utilities such as Electrical utilities, Pipeline enterprises or
railways.
The FOX515T can easily be used together with all other members of ABBs FOX-family, namely
FOX512&515 (mainly Access-MUX) or FOX515X as consolidation unit for network sections with typically
STM-1 or STM-4. For small stations / locations the FOX515M may be the perfect solution.
The FOX515T provides a number of services at the sites (e.g. PDH & SDH, ISDN PRA, Synchronisation,
Ethernet / Gigabit-Ethernet).
The FOX515T also supports multiple rings as shown in the figure below.

2.5 Ethernet features
The FOX515T includes Ethernet interfaces. It can support both Ethernet tunnelling (L1) and Ethernet

switching (L2) depending on what type of Ethernet modules that is inserted in the shelf. Some modules

the terms bridge and switch have the same meaning in this document. The fact the bridge has several
ports makes it a multi-port bridge or a switch.
The modules that support tunnelling contain a number of Ethernet interfaces and mappers. The mappers
are used to map the Ethernet traffic into SDH. The number of interfaces and mappers depend of the
selected module. See specific detail in the description of the available modules in chapter 3.
The modules that support switching contain an Ethernet switch in addition to the Ethernet interfaces and
the mappers.
Dedicated Service modules contain an Ethernet crossbar to make is possible to interconnect the different
Ethernet switches on the modules. This makes it possible to switch traffic between the different modules
without using SDH capacity
The external ports are termed LAN ports. They are attached to the physical LAN connectors of the
device.
The internal ports of the switch that are connected to the mappers are termed WAN ports. For each of
the WAN ports, the WAN mapper can create a channel for the port’s Ethernet traffic in the SDH
interface. Such a channel consists of a configurable number of virtual containers. The Ethernet traffic on
the WAN port in question is mapped into the payload of the virtual containers and the number selected,
decides the bandwidth of the channel. The mappers have the capacity of mapping a full 100 Mbps or
1000 Mbps WAN interface into virtual containers.
The fact that some of the ports of the bridge are connected to long distance channels makes the
FOX515T a remote bridge. The combination of two FOX515T’s on different geographical sites, with a
WAN channel between them, can be viewed as a single bridge, with LAN ports at each site.

modules do not include the physical connectors and must be used together with suitable connector
module (CM).
CM’s are available with support for a different number of interfaces and different types of connectors.
The E1 interfaces provides a number of different services as shown below:
• Transparent leased line
• Framed leased line
• ISDN primary rate access
It is possible to configure the E1 interfaces individually to support the different services.
FOX515T includes a special feature to reduce jitter and wander. The pointer processing for the interface
is switched off and controlled frame slips are performed if the frequency of the SDH timing is not
synchronised to the frequency of the service interface.
No frame loss, multiframe loss or CRC-4 errors are detected when controlled frame slips are performed.
This feature is only supported in the framed leased line and the ISDN PRA modes

Communication Network). Here, the term DCN is used. A DCN is usually physically or logically separated
from the network carrying customer traffic.
The management of FOX515T is based on the IP protocol suite. The main purpose of the DCN is to
provide IP-connectivity between a management system and the managed devices in any possible
topology and network configuration.
Basically, the IP connectivity is realized through following types of channels:
• Ethernet Channels
• Point to Point (PPP) Channels
• Unnumbered DCN connections are fully supported
This is illustrated by the figure below.
