ELK518E Power System Stability

TERM PROJECT

1. Consider the system given in Problem 5.6 (in the textbook by Sauer and Pai). Assume that the
system is operated at the condition defined as in 5.6 (a) and 5.6 (b).
A) Linearize the system at the current operating point and study the stability at this point as you
calculate the eigenvalues of the system matrix.
B) Using a computer and a numerical integration technique applied to the nonlinear model,
simulate the system’s response (changes in the state variables vs. time) for small step changes in
the mechanical torque while keeping 𝐸𝑓𝑑 constant.
C) Keep 𝐸𝑓𝑑 constant. Gradually increase the mechanical torque and show the changes in
eigenvalues on a complex plane. Comment on the stability of the system for the varying
parameter/input (mechanical torque) as you validate your results with the graphs of time-
domain simulations and the linearization that you might apply.

2. Solve problem 7.9 in the textbook by Sauer and Pai.
