Wind Turbine Standards
Description:
Wind turbines are the promising renewable energy sources. For the reliable operation of wind
turbines wind turbine, its components and associated technologies must meet certain standards.
IEC 61400 series covering most of the standards related to the wind turbine for example large-
scale structural testing and acoustic noise measurement, and a 6-part information model for
communications for monitoring and control of wind power plants, standardization of wind turbines
is done by ISO, ANSI and other national standardization bodies also. Together these standards
help to keep design and production reliable and conducive to the sustainable use of wind turbines
so that wind turbines can operate for the duration of their expected lifetime and give both
environmental and economic benefits.

1. IEC 61400-12-1 Ed. 2.0 b:2017
Description:
Wind energy generation systems - Part 12-1: Power performance measurements of
electricity producing wind turbines
IEC 61400-12-1:2017 tells the methodology for measuring the power performance and
characteristics of a wind turbine. And this can be applied to the testing of wind turbines of
any kind and any size connected to the grid. In addition to that, this standard explains another
method to be used to find the power performance characteristics of small wind when
connected to the grid or a battery bank. This method is applicable for performance evaluation
of specific wind turbines at specific locations, but equally the methodology can be used to
make generic comparisons between different wind turbine models or different wind turbine
settings when site-specific conditions and data filtering influences are taken into account.
Justification:
Power performance characteristics is important to operate the wind turbine. If the power
characteristic curve is taken wrongly or not according to the standard procedure, then it will end
up with wrong operation of the system. When user plans to store the energy in battery bank then
he or she needs to know about the power characteristics, then if there is a standard procedure to
get power characteristics then the job is done. Another advantage is by following this standard user
can avoid unnecessary expenditure. User can design optimum system using this standard. It will
help to avoid faulty decision taking.
2. IEC 61400-24 Ed. 1.0 en:2010
Description:
. wind power systems need high technical skills in installment and maintenance. And now in sri
lanka CEB accepts individuals to install solar panel not wind turbine. Consideration for location
of wind turbines are far more important compare to solar panel.
