Own Words!

I learned early in my life the
importance of goal setting. I
believe that goals you set are
the goals you get. Every
night before I go to sleep my
trainer Karin and I take ten
minutes to review my goals,
and if needed set more goals
for the next day. I tell her that
I can visualize reaching each
goal I set for myself. Then
when I wake up in early
morning, I take the time to
review my goals again and
reinforce that I am right on
track before I start my day. I
start the day with my most
important goal set for myself
the evening before. I try not
to put too many goals on my
daily list and don’t worry if I
can’t get them all accom-
plished in one day. I simply
place unfinished goals on my
next day’s list. Karin says not
to worry too much and pro-
ceed naturally.
You might wonder about a
horse and a person talking
things over like this, but
believe me, we do. It’s a mat-
ter of getting on the same
wavelength, being friends
and having your hearts in the
same place, and then people
and horses can talk about all
sorts of things. I think I have
the best of everything a horse
could have, the pleasant
country road to go for a
relaxing walk with Karin, the
mountains around me, my
competition in the ring, and
my trainer Karin to help me
learn all the special moves I
should know in the dressage
ring. It’s fun to be a horse
when you have a good
human friend!
I love learning new things.
It’s fun to learn new curricu-
lum and jump over obstacles.
I am happiest when I have a
set training schedule.
Recently I started to keep a
personal diary, so now I can
remember my personal goals
for the show ring, plus all my
feelings, experiences, and
dreams. I call it my ‘Diary of
a Champion’. My friend
Karin helps me write it all
down. This diary keeps me
on the path to reaching my
goals of becoming the dres-
sage horse I know I was born
to be. My diary constantly
reminds me of targets I have
set for myself. I always write
down what I have accom-
plished and what I have seen
each day.
I often hear my human
friends complaining about
not having enough time in
the day to work on their
goals. Most people don’t
believe in goal setting, but I
do. I often hear them talking
about how life is tough, you
better get used to it and no
one gets a break. I have
learned not to listen to this
type of talk and instead tune
into my own feelings to help
me sort out what is most
important to have in my life.
Horses don’t always set
goals for themselves you
might think. But as you can
tell by now I am a most
unusual horse! I like to think
so and Karin thinks so, too.
My friend Karin says some
people tell her they have
been trying all their lives to
reach their goals, but their
outlook on life has become
grim. But when Karin asks
them what their goals are,
they often don’t really know.
When we talk it over, my
trainer Karin says that goal
setting is like a road map you
can follow. Without setting
goals, it is very easy to lose
sight of what you really like
to do and where you want to
go.
Goal setting keeps me on my
path. Karin teases me some-
times with a twinkle in her
eyes that no one would travel
south if they like to end up
north. That’s funny if you
think of it, isn’t it? But Karin
says a lot of folks go day
after day not knowing for
sure if it’s north or south. It’s
the same with goals. When
you decide on where you
want to go, all you have to do
is follow the direction you
have set out for yourself.
Then you have to work but
the journey sort of takes care
of itself and you can concen-
trate on having fun, too.
Karin tells me goals are very
important and you need to
work on them without get-
ting too worried about it.
I am twelve years old now
and I know my long-term
goal is to become a Grand
Prix horse. However, before
I can reach my long-term
goal, I have to take a look at
my next short-term goal
which is to train to second-
level dressage. This process
could take me another year
or more, from where I am
now.
It’s said that champions don’t
fall from heaven, that they
are made through constant
focus and strive to advance. I
want to be a champion. It
truly takes time, dedication,
and a lot of commitment to
stay true to my dreams. I’m a
horse but I know that for
sure. I believe everything
starts with a goal and a
dream, and the dreamer that
dares to live his or her dream
should be willing to climb
many mountains to reach
them.
The next test I must learn is a
first-level dressage test,
which requires me to learn a
lot of new movements. When

hugged by a black bear. And
you’ve likely been
impressed with the bear’s
climbing ability. And per-
haps looked over your
shoulder while you were
busy being impressed.
But bear-clawed beeches
aren’t as common as they
once were. The American
beech, Fagus grandiflora,
has become another member
of the North American
“trees-devastated-by-import-

Beech trees are still out
there in the forest. But many
of the big ones are gone,
victims of the notorious
beech bark disease. It’s a
one-two punch — a tiny
scale insect bores holes in
the bark and a fungus

all too likely to be small and
stunted or to bear the ugly,
