A Study of English Usage by Tourists Guide at The Tourist Site


in Luang Prabang city

Abstract
This research aims at: 1) to study the problem of English communication of
tourist guides in the tourist sites in Luang Prabang city, (2) To develop the skill of
English communication of tourist guides, 3) to recommend the development of
English culture skill in communication of tourist guides at the tourist sites in Luang
Prabang City.
This Quantitative research is selected 30 tourist guides in Luang Prabang
city. Area of research is to focus importance of tourist guide and research method is
followed by using questionnaires from those aforesaid tourist guides. The note as the
tool to collect the information from opinion & Suggestion. The sample group is
consisted of 30 persons, General information about tourists at the tourist sites in
Luang Prabang, Laos. The analysis of personal data, the achievement of development
skills of English usage in communication of the tourist guides at the tourist sites in
Luang Prabang of Laos. To develop speaking skills in English, most of the tourist
guides have been taught the skills at 90.9 percent, followed by the experience of the
development applied to describe the tourist sites. The high level at 90.6 percent gains
experience from the development of skills. The approximate high level is at 84.8
percent. The high level at 78.8 percent, the most in the English language to describe
the tourist sites at a level up to 66.7 percent, the most appropriate time of the
acquisition at the very most, and 66.6 percent are confident in explaining the tourist
sites. 60.7 percent, tourist guides were all satisfied with the proposed acquisition at
the most reaches 94 percent.
In this research, the achievement of developing skills in English
communication of the tourist guides have shown the skill of the average English after
the acquisition of the development of skills in English communication to find at the
first time is (x =67.13, SD. = 15.94) and to find at the second time is (x = 88.37, SD.
=11.12) the statistical significance is at level .001.

Introduction
The importance of the cultural communication in the contemporary world
of English, the proliferation of foreign tourists in Luang Phrabang city has been
activated to use English as a common language to communicate; because Luang
Phrabang is the most beautiful and attractive city in ASEAN ranking system of tourist
cities and accepted by the UNESCO. Additionally, the declaration of Luang Phrabang
as a world heritage city is very essentially to study the various cultural fields. This is
the reason why it is seriously lacking studies between the relations between the
importance of English usage and the culturally dimension of Luang Prabang tourist
sites.
Luang Prabang is the best location in the north of Laos People’s democratic
republic. Because It has a very beautiful landscape place attractive tourist such as;
Phusi Mountain, National museum, Xiengthong temple, Visoun temple, Tumting
cave, the waterfall of kuangsi, tatse waterfall. Each of these places has many foreigns
who come to visit and learn about laotain cultural diversity and tradition. It is the
main landmark in Laos PDR because it has a lots of ancient architecture and building
which is attracted the tourist to create the recreational activities in Luang Prabang, for
example, climbing a mountain, natural sightseeing, historical Buddhist places. Luang
Prabang is the most ancestor place of the originality of traditional Buddhism in Laos.
Additionally; it is the city which combines between the modern style of travel and
Buddhist faith. Furthermore, the staff and guide in the tourist sites are the key person
who give and tell about the history of Luang Prabang especially this research focuses
on the capacity of the staff who can use and develop their English under the standard
of the English usage in modern society (Prof. Supachai singyabouth. 2553 B.E), p.20).
In order to evaluate the standard of the staff and guide in the tourist site
who using English as a second language to communicate the importance of Luang
Prabang to the tourist especially the foreigner. It is useful to study how staff and guide
in the tourist sites use English and find the resolution to improve their English or find
the alternative resolution to set the model of studying English for tourist guide in
Luang Prabang; In this research, I will create the instrument to evaluate the English
usage of the staff in accordance with the academic criteria especially in the field of
linguistics or the English for tourist guide. However, in Laos’s people’s democratic
republics, it has a course concerning the person who wants to be a tourist guides in
Laos and take three years for study especially English. This research benefits for this
course vice versa. The assessment of English usage Luangphrabang will affect the
course of learning how to be a tourist guide.

Objectives of the Study

There are three specific objectives:

1) To study the problem of English communication of tourist guide in the tourist


sites in Luang Prabng city.

2) To develop the skill of English communication of tourists guide at the tourist


sites in Luang Prabang city.
3) To recommend the skill developing of English communication of tourist
guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang City

Research Questions
1) The problem of English communication of tourist guide in the tourism at
Luang Prabang city
2) How to develop of skill of English communication of tourist guide in the
tourism at Luang Prabang city

Research Methodology

This study researcher tried to search various information to write thesis on


creditable sources of data such as popular libraries, national library, Thammasat
University, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Chulalongkorn University
etc. Data from documentary research such: as book, text, journal, Newspaper and
other necessary documentary materials and so on as given below:

Population and Sample Groups


The population in this study is people in the tourist sites in Luang Prabang
who can communicate in English for 30 persons and foreign tourists who come to
visit in Luang Prabang suchas: Wat xiengthong, National museum and Phusi
Mountain. The sample groups are people in tourist sites in Luang Prabang for 30
persons who can communicate in English; the measure of the ability to communicate
in English for 30 person’s interview, questionnaire and foreign tourists who visit the
cultural tourism in Luang Prabang. The interesting place is Wat Xiengthong, National
Museum and Phusi Mountain. The foreign tourist can communicate in English.
Determining the number of tourist guide sample groups. Determined accordance with
tourist guides in wat Xiengthong, national museum and Phusi Mountain.
The research will take 3 weeks, as detailed below:
Week 1 carry out the tourist guides at the tourist site at Luang Prabang before
developing knowledge of English. The answer to the foreigners on tourist sites in
Luang Prabang using the structure of the speech described the tourist guide.
Week 2 action by the authorities to conduct the tourist guides at the tourist sites
and evaluated three of the participants to develop skills at first by setting the tourist

guides at 3 places such as Wat Xiengthong, National museum, Phusi mountain, that
share the property.
Week 3 action to clarify the shortcomings of skills, the tourist guides at the
tourist sites at Laung Prabang. Lao improve defect and action by the authorities to
tourist guide at the tourist site at Luang Prabang. Lao and foreign tourists into the area
then evaluated after acquisition at second Post - test and interview the satisfaction of
foreign tourists who have been briefed by the tourist guide at the tourist site.
Data Analysis Methods
This research undefined variable to determine the actual following:
- Independent variables include: The general status of the tourist guide sample
groups status, gender, age, income, education income and finish tourist guide course.
- The dependent variable includes: the study of English usage by the tourist
guide in the tourist site in Luang Prabang, when data collection is complete

tourist sites in Luang Prabang. The researcher has created a tool used in the research
as below:
Creation Tools in the Research
Creating a research tool for the research was carried out to build up a review of
theoretical concepts. And research related to the study of the English usage by tourist
guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang. The measure establishes a question about
the five levels based on the concept of Likert by determining the answer.
1. Theoretical studies and information related to the study of the English usage
by tourist guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang, the literature and research that
had been carried out the research.

and update as recommended.

Characteristics of Tools
The characteristics of tool for questionnaire; in this research the research tools
used in the research were given a questionnaire that were developed within the
framework of the research of English usage by tourist guides at the tourist sites in
Luang Prabang. In order to collect data the questionnaire is divided into three
episodes contain.

Part1 General Information about the survey respondents, the questionnaire


checklist consisted: education status, gender, age, and income and education, finish
tourist guide course.
Part2 Questionnaires about the comments of the foreign visiting places in Luang
Prabang. Questionnaire prepared by the level, which is the answer that the researchers
divided the questions into three development areas.
Part 3 questions are open-ended and the sample groups have commented on the
problems and suggestions about the use of English usage of the tourist guides at the
tourist sites in Luang Prabang.
Monitoring the Quality of Tools
In determining the quality of tools the research was conducted as follows:
1. The suggestion from experts and advisors check the tool of research.
2. To determine the validity questionnaire completed by the present chairman
and advisor.
To consider both the content, and the structure of the format of the
questionnaire a well as the language used and the quality of the tools; by the IOC for

Reliability

statistics and present the information in the following order.

Research Results
After the research of this case study of A Study of English Usage by Tourists
Guide at The Tourist Site in Luang Prabang city. Objectives of the research there are
three main as stated below: 1) to study the problem of English communication of
tourist guides in the tourist sites in Luang Prabng city, 2) to develop the skill of
English communication of tourist guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang city and
3) to recommend the development of English culture skill in communication of tourist
guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang City, and after the research can
summarized as follows:
1.To Design, Develop Skills in Using the English Language to Describe the
Tourist sites
From the opinion in evaluation and suggestion of the tourist guide to
develop language skills in English, communications of the tourist guides at the tourist
sites in Luang Prabang, Laos.
The Most of the tourists get knowledge from developing skills guide 96.67
percent, followed by. Usages the experience from developing skills to adapt with
explains about the tourist guide in the high level of the 93.33 percent. Get knowledge
from developing skills The high level of 86.67 percent, Get knowledge from develop
skills in the high level of 83.33 percent, The structure of English help in describing
about the tourist sites a level of up to 76.67 percent, The suitable of the time to
develop skills at the very most, and 73.33 percent, Confidence to describing about the
tourist guides at the very most, by 66.67 percent, The appreciation with developing
skills and suggestion for all the way of developing skills at the most reaches 96.67
percent.

2. The Development of English Speaking Skills on Tourist Sites in Luang


Prabang, Laos.

3. The Achievement of English language Skills to Communicate with the
Tourist Guides at the Tourist Sites in Luang Prabang, Laos.
The result from all 30 tourist guides all through the development of English
communication skills of the tourist guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang, Lao,

following five aspects.

people are (5.6%). In the case of this your opinion of the overall explanation of the
tourist guides. Excellent for 6 people accounted for (16.7) Very good for 12 people
representing (33.3) Satisfied / good / detailed / friendly for 8 people accounted for
(22.2) Interesting / useful / helpful for 10 people representing (27.8). In the case of

Satisfied / appreciate 12 people representing (33.3%). It is seen that foreign tourists


get all the useful information after hearing a lecture, and are extremely satisfied with
tourist guides to describe about the tourist site in Luang Prabang, Laos.
From the questionnaire and the tourist guides of the tourist guides were to
develop speaking skills in English about the tourist sites in Luang Prabang, Laos
indicated that. Most of the tourists get knowledge from developing skills guide 96.67

In conclusion, the researcher can say that Skills development and English
speaking of the tourist guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang Laos. This research
was conducted in a sample of the tourist guides who can communicate in English.
This is a structural model of spoken English skills to communicate effectively.

Conclusions

This research aims 1) to study problems of English communications of tourist


guides in the tourist sites in Luang Prabang city. 2) To develop the skill of English
communications of tourist guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang city. 3) To
recommend the skill of English in communications of the tourist guide at the tourist
site in Luang Prabang city. The samples groups were selected by tourist guides at the
tourist sites in Luang Prabang Laos, 30 persons have been measuring their ability in
English communicate in English, inquiries and interviews in English. And foreign
tourists who visited cultural tourist sites at Luang Prabang in Laos, 36 peoples can
communicate in English. (1) Interview about Knowledge of cultural tourist guides at
the tourist sites in Luang Prabang, Laos. (2) The interview of satisfaction foreigner
about tourist’s tourist sites in Prabang. (Laos) Problem in English usage in
communications of tourist guides of tourist sites in Luang Prabang. (3) The survey
and opinion of researcher for developing skills in communication, of tourist guides at
the tourist sites in LuangPrabang, Laos. (4) To develop skills in communications of
tourist guides at the tourist sites in LuangPrabang, Laos.

Creation of an English-speaking skill is to evaluate opinions and suggestions


of the tourist guides to develop language skills in English, communications in the

guides were all satisfied with the proposed acquisition at the most reaches 94 percent.

2. The development of language skills in English communications of tourist

3. Achievement of developing skills in English communications of the tourist


guides at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang.

has shown the skill of the average English after the acquisition of. The development

In conclusion, one can say that Skills development and English speaking of
the tourist guide at the tourist site in Luang Prabang Laos this research. The
acquisition was conducted in sample a group of tourist guides who can communicate
in English; a structural model of spoken English skills to communicate effectively.

Discussion

From the research found

1. The Findings in the First Issue

The design skills using English language to explain in the tourist sites;

3 The Findings Point to Three Achievements of English Language Skills


to Communicate in the Tourist Site in Luang Prabang, Laos

The result of all 30 tourist guides through the development of English


communication skills at the tourist sites in Luang Prabang, Laos, describing stories
about the tourist sites, and evaluated by interviewing the satisfaction of foreign
