LAS FY1 (FOUNDATION YEAR ONE-LEVEL) , SURGICAL


DIVISION

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are currently looking for a replacement LAS FY1 to maintain our


1:12 internal rotation rota. We offer a wide experience in General
Surgery and we are committed to providing training and study
opportunities. You will be encouraged to maintain a Personal
Development Plan that can be used as evidence that all F1
competencies have been achieved whilst in this post. This post is
based at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

GENERAL INFORMATION

All departments at the Conquest Hospital are very well equipped and in
particular the pathology and radiology departments provide much of
the latest available technology.

Recreational opportunities include rural pursuits, sailing, golf etc.


Conveniently situated for London and Dover.

The hospital is sited on the outskirts of Hastings but most amenities


are within easy reach, being about three miles from the sea front and
town centre. Car parking is available but limited.

2. SURGICAL CLINICAL UNIT

A Divisional structure operates at the East Sussex Healthcare NHS


Trust. The Division of Surgery is led by Miss Imelda Donnellan and Mr
Andrew Sandison is the General Surgery Specialty Lead. The General
Surgery Department comprises General Surgery, Breast Surgery,
Colorectal and Vascular service.

3. Study and Training

The post is not recognised by the University of London for


postgraduate training however the same amount of training will be
given as if recognised. There is a Postgraduate Medical Library
situated in the Education Centre.
Mandatory teaching sessions for all Foundation Year One and LAS FY1
Doctors take place on a weekly basis. The timetable incorporates
induction topics set out in the GMC Doctor publication.

4. MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

The post is governed by the Terms and Conditions of Service for


Hospital Medical and Dental Staff.

The appointment is whole-time plus 1:12 on call.

The appointment is residential and on site, single accommodation is


provided subject to a charge. Married accommodation is limited and
subject to availability and an appropriate charge.

5. OTHER FACILITIES

Limited car parking is available on site and there is a small


convenience store, pharmacy and GP surgery within walking distance.
The town centre is approximately three miles away.

6. CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

Appropriate medical qualifications and full or limited registration with


the General Medical Council.

Satisfactory Occupational Health clearance.

7. DUTIES OF THE POST – LAS FY1 (Foundation Year One


Level)

 Clerking of emergency and elective patients ensuring that


mandatory documentation is completed.

 Admit and investigate emergency admissions, under the


supervision of the CT, Registrar and Consultant.

 Venepuncture and cannulation of patients when appropriate and


necessary, ensuring all consenting has been agreed with the
patient.
 Undertake ward duties to ensure patient pathways are
progressed.

 Discuss with relatives any clinical concerns and plans as


necessary.

 Timely writing of discharge summaries.

 Full post-operative care.

 Timely assessment of patients in order discharge planning can


be facilitated.

 Adherence to all ESHT policies including ‘Bare Below the Elbows’.

 Ensure accurate completion of documentation.

 Attend Consultant ward rounds.

 As necessary attend operating theatre sessions for observation


and possible assisting.

 Any other duties appropriate to the post.

LOCATION OF DUTIES - ALL POSTS

Full time at the Conquest Hospital, Hastings.

The post will rotate between the Consultants so that all Foundation
Year One Doctors and LAS FY1 Doctors will receive general surgical
experience as approved for Registration purposes. The post will cover
the surgical wards and Surgical Assessment Unit.

8. EMERGENCY DUTIES

a. General Surgery/Urology

The Foundation Year One Doctors and LAS FY1 Doctors in General
Surgery undertake a 1:12 full shift work pattern weekends.
Prospective cover is required.
The junior doctor also accepts that he/she will perform duties in
occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request
of the appropriate Consultant, in consultation where practicable, with
colleagues both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the
professions and the Department that, while juniors accept that they
will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional
commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and in
particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this
kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis. Additional overtime
payment is made under these circumstances.

9. POLICY FOR FOUNDATION YEAR ONE DOCTORS AND LAS


FY1 DOCTORS LEAVE

Generally, only one Foundation Year One/LAS FY1 doctor may be on


leave at any one time. No Annual Leave will be granted when on night
shift.

Leave will be allocated if not booked within the first 2-3 weeks of
taking up the post, but some flexibility is possible by means of
agreement between colleagues. Any Foundation Year One or LAS FY1
Doctors requiring specific dates must make their needs known to the
Administrator prior to taking up the appointment. All the Foundation
Year One doctors/LAS FY1 doctors are required to work on the last two
days of their contract. No annual leave will be allowed to be booked
for these last two days.

The Trust is committed to providing safe and effective care for


patients. To ensure this, there is an agreed procedure for medical
staff that enables them to report, quickly and confidentially, concerns
about the conduct, performance or health of medical colleagues (Chief
Medical Officer, December 1996). All medical staff, practising in the
Trust, should ensure that they are familiar with the procedure and
apply it.
