To demonstrate the functions & working
mechanism of Permanent Packer
 Permanent Packer
 It is a standard component of the completion string of oil/gas wells used to provide
a seal between:
 The outside of the production tubing
 And the inside of the casing, liner, or wellbore wall.

 It is a sealing device that:

 Isolates and contains produced fluids and pressures within the wellbore.
 To protect the casing and other formations above or below the producing zone.
 Permanent Packer

 Permanent packers are those packers that cannot be entirely retrieved

and reinstalled in the well.

 This type of packer is normally run separately on electric cable or slick line,
a work string or tubing.

 Permanent packers are production packers designed for high pressure

and/or high temperature wells.
 Once these packers are set milling operations are required for retrieval.
 This type of packers are sometimes called either a production packer or a
retainer-production packer.

 Types of Permanent Packer

 Wireline set permanent packers

 Hydraulic set permanent packers
 Wireline set

 These are generally run and installed using electric wireline.

 When the setting depth is reached setting tools are activated from
surface by electric current to set the packer.

 These packers may also be run on tubing using hydraulic setting

tools, which are activated by surface pump pressure to set the
packers.
 Hydraulic set

 These are generally run on the bottom of the production tubing.

 When the required depth is reached pump pressure is applied to set
the packer.
 Functions
 Provide a seal between the tubing and casing annulus.
 Prevent downhole movement of the tubing string.
 Support some of the weight of the tubing.
 Protect the annular casing from corrosion from produced fluids and
high pressures.
 Provide an isolation for multiple producing zones.
 Hold well-servicing fluid (kill fluids, packer fluids) in the casing
annulus.
 Applications

 These type of permanent /millable packers ideally suited for

application where high differential pressure are encountered in:
 Production
 Stimulation/ Treating
 Water flooding
 Testing
 Temporary Bridge Plug
