Martin Luther King Jr.

After-School Tutoring Ministry

The Martin Luther King Ministry (MLK) is an after-school tutoring ministry located at
the Parks and Recreation Center in the City of Steubenville, OH. The ministry serves the youth
of the Steubenville City School District. Tutors leave from the rosary circle at 3:15pm and arrive
back on campus at 4:45pm. The MLK tutors come from a variety of majors such as Education,
Psychology, Theology, Engineering and Catechetics. We are also blessed with a strong presence
of men from the Priestly Discernment Program. We pray in the van for our students on the way
to and from the Center. Tutoring takes place in the meeting room located in the side of the
center. All tutors must sign in at the front desk before going into the back room. We set up long
tables and chairs when arriving and put them away before we leave. At the center, we provide
homework help and tutoring. To improve literacy, we encourage the students to read a book
once completing their homework. If time allows, we provide puzzles, coloring sheets, card
games and various arts and crafts. Additionally, we are allowed to use the gym and outside
playground equipment for games and activities. Our patron saints are St. John Bosco and St.
Thomas Aquinas.
