MIT Research Paper

MIT or Massachusetts Institute of Technology was founded on April 10, 1861, in

Cambridge Massachusetts which happened to be two days before the Civil War. Funds for the

school were raised and eventually the first classes began in 1865. William Barton Rogers was

the founder and first president of MIT. He was originally a professor of natural philosophy at a

different college when he had a vision for a school of higher education and more options. MIT is

a very prestigious private school who is accepting of all religions. There is currently a Muslims

Students’ Association which helps Muslims practice their religion at college. This school is

currently co-ed and has been that since the beginning of its opening. The gender ratio is very

close with men being 54% and women being 46% for 11,000 students altogether. If you are

planning to attend MIT, you can expect to pay $45,000 annually (Investopedia).

MIT is a very well-known private school who admits only the best. The average SAT

score with the new 1600 point scale is 1520. The ACT scores average at 33-35. GPA averages

are 4.13 weighted with the acceptance rate being 7% (PrepScholar). You can tell by these

numbers that your chances of getting in are very low if you're not qualified.

Currently MIT is ranked as one of the highest schools for engineering and physical

science (Britannica). This school offers many opportunities for foreign student programs to help

you if you want to study abroad. They also allow students from high school to participate in

summer internships where they can job shadow different fields offered at the school. While

you're not studying at the campus, there are many events available off campus that are easily in

driving distance. You can spend some time in the Museum of Science or visit the Legoland

Discovery Center. There are also many grocery centers like H Mart, Trader Joe's, Target, and

Costco. All these areas are within a 30-minute drive so don't worry about being bored during the

weekends (Google Maps).

At MIT, scholarships are available to all but are usually awarded to people with financial

needs. You will automatically be considered for the scholarships if you apply for specific

financial aid. Students need to fill out an annual information review which goes over their

background, interests, and experiences. Grants are also available when you apply for the normal

financial aid. Federal grants can be earned by anyone but state grants usually are based on either

marital achievements or actual need.

.Students after their time at MIT are very successful in their career. The field I'm

interested in which is computer technology has employed 30% of MIT students. 22% of students

have gone into financial careers and 13% in engineering services. There are also very good

connections through the schools that got students jobs afterward. About a quarter of the students

found jobs afterward through job fairs or networking. 83% of students found internships during

their time at the school and 19% of these led to full-time jobs.

MIT offers many clubs and activities that can apply to the interests of every student.

There are clubs from political/debate clubs to programming and religious clubs. They are all

mostly student-run that creates a welcoming atmosphere for every student and interest. The

school also has 33 varsity sports with 16 being men and 15 for women. About 20% of

undergraduates join a team while at MIT.

Dorms in MIT are very similar to most colleges with how they work and policy. In order

to get the roommate that you want, you must both apply for it on the assignment allocation. In

order for you to be roommates in the first place, you must be assigned to the same building. All

rooms are gender inclusive. The school expects students to respect the rooms and not do

anything that can damage school property. All illegal drug use is prohibited and no one under the

age of 21 should be using or selling alcohol. Living on campus life is made very convenient with

dining venues throughout the campus. Students can sign up to buy meal plans that provide 10 to

19 meals per week. Dining dollars are also available for vendors that are separate from the

school meal plan. With this, you can input money on a card and use it throughout the year for

food. Prices for meals can range from $3-$15 based on the meal you are getting.
