HEMPEL’S 174DE

Description: HEMPEL’S 174DE is a one-component, moisture-cured polyurethane zinc primer,

which contains micaceous iron ore (mio), too. 174DE has got excellent adhesion
properties.

Recommended use: As long-term primer on steel for epoxy and polyurethane coating
systems in severely corrosive environments.

Service temperatures: Maximum, dry exposure only: 140°C/284°F see REMARKS overleaf
Note: Elevated service temperatures will negatively influence the mechanical properties of the
coating. A combined mechanical and chemical exposure may result in mechanical damage of
the coating.

Certificates/approvals: Approved according to BAYER Inc., Standard 2207

Availability: Not part of Group Assortment. Local availability subject to confirmation.

Product Data Sheet
HEMPEL’S 174DE

Surface preparation: New steel: Remove oil and grease thoroughly with suitable detergent. Remove
salt and other contaminants PREPARATION: by high pressure fresh water
cleaning. Abrasive blasting to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501, part 1) with a sharp-edged
surface profile corresponding to Rugotest No. 3, BN 10a, Keane-Tator
Comparator, 2.0 G/S, 2 S, or ISO Comparator, Medium (G).

Application conditions: Use only where application and curing can proceed at temperatures above -10°C
[14.6°F]. The CONDITIONS: temperature of the surface must also be above this
limit. The paint itself should be 15°C [59°F] or above.
Optimum results are obtained at 17-23°C [60-75°F].
A minimum relative humidity of 35% is recommended, the best is 55-85%.
In general it is always recommended to apply only on a dry and clean surface
with a temperature of at least 3 °C [5°F] above the dew point to avoid condensation. See also
the separate application instruction for 1 Component Polyurethane- products

Preceding coat: None

Subsequent coat: None or according to specification

Film thicknesses: May be specified in another film thickness than indicated depending on purpose
and area of use. This will alter spreading rate and may influence amount of
thinning necessary, drying time and overcoating interval.
Range of recommended dry film thicknesses is 40 - 80 micron [1,6 – 3,2 mils].
It can be necessary to use thinner to get a closed and evenly film.
All recommendations refer to airless spray application. With other application
methods it may be difficult to reach this Dryfilm thickness, therefore an additional
layer of 174DE may be relevant. Low surface- and paint temperatures can affect
the anti-sagging properties of the paint badly.

Note: HEMPEL’S 174DE reacts with moisture under formation of carbon dioxide.
Store in a dry place and keep the can tightly closed until use. Open cans with
caution as overpressure might exist.
Products based on moisture-curing polyurethanes tend to cracking and
blistering when applied in excessive high thickness. Avoid application in
thicknesses more than twice the specified.

Overcoating: Before overcoating after exposure in contaminated environment, clean the

surface thoroughly. Under special circumstances, roughening of the surface is
necessary to ensure intercoat adhesion. Lower relative humidity as described
overleaf renew the minimal overcoating interval.

Note: HEMPEL’S 174DE is for professional use only.
