BRAC Bank CSR Activities: Giving Back To The Society


Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is embedded in the value system of BRAC Bank Limited. For BRAC Bank, being
committed to CSR means giving statement that the bank is ethically committed towards the society of this country in which it
operates.

BRAC Bank's corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Bangladesh are in line with its 3P (People, Planet, Profit) philosophy
which are framed by the vision that was instilled by its Founder Chairman Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG, who founded this
bank with a vision of financial inclusion of the unbanked grassroots people.

The establishment of BRAC Bank's CSR strategy is a crucial component that reflects the intention for the sustainable
development of our society and our stakeholders which means having policies and procedures in place that integrate social,
environmental, ethical, human rights or consumer concerns into business operations and core strategy – all in close
collaboration with stakeholders. For BRAC Bank, the overall aim for CSR activities is to achieve a positive impact on society
as a whole, while maximizing the creation of shared value for the owners of the business, its employees, shareholders and
stakeholders.

Bangladesh Bank CSR Guideline is the guiding principal in designing our CSR roadmap. BRAC Bank prioritizes on long-term
programs rather than the short-term ones that have sustainable and lasting impact on the people and society of the country.

At BRAC Bank, employees work with a greater mission. They are motivated to contribute to the bank's social initiatives like
annual fundraiser marathon, warm clothes distribution and blood donation. Employees' passionate involvement in CSR adds
new dimensions to the bank's CSR portfolio.

Education

Realizing Potential: BRAC Bank- Prothom Alo Trust Adamya Medhabi Scholarship

'BRAC Bank-Prothom Alo Trust Adamya Medhabi Scholarship' was introduced in 2010 to assist meritorious student of
insolvent families fulfill their pursuit of higher education. Now a big number of financially challenged students, especially in the
rural parts of the country do not face dropout. BRAC Bank stands by with the students in their entire academic life. With the
scholarship, many students are now studying in engineering universities, medical colleges and other reputed institutions. A
total of 500 students have so far availed the scholarship.

Each year 50 meritorious students from the disadvantaged families who achieve GPA 5 in SSC level get the scholarship for
HSC study. Among them, the students who also repeat GPA 5 in HSC level, get scholarships for graduation. In line with the
3P Philosophy, BRAC Bank always works towards realizing the potential of young people. BRAC Bank is proud to be part of
an initiative that helps students live a prosperous life.

BRAC Bank provides scholarships to the meritorious students of Business Studies of Dhaka
University

BRAC Bank Limited has provided scholarships to the meritorious students of Business Studies Faculty of Dhaka University. The
bank as part of its corporate social responsibility is providing scholarships to 40 students at the faculty. University of Dhaka is
the oldest and highest learning seat of the country. Since its inception the University has a distinct character of having
distinguished scholars as faculties who have enriched the global pool of knowledge by making notable contributions in the fields
of teaching and research and producing the brightest students of the country. As a public institution, the university provides
higher education to the students at affordable cost. Still there are financially challenged students who find it difficult to pursue
their education at the university. The program helps realize potential of the students and it goes in line with our corporate vision
to build an enlightened Bangladesh. The scholarship will make positive and sustainable impact on the people and society in the
long term.
Realizing Higher Education Dream: BRAC University Scholarships

BRAC Bank is providing financial support to the meritorious but financially challenged students to help them pursue higher
education at the university. Each year, 10 undergrad students avail this scholarship that covers full tuition fee and living
expenses. The scholarship program will continue for four years. The scholarship helps realize the dream for higher education
of the students.

Making technical education affordable: UCEP Institute of Science and Technology

BRAC Bank Limited has partnered to support UCEP Institute of Science and Technology (UIST) that provides technical
education at affordable cost.

The contribution will be used to establish an E-Library for the students of the polytechnic institute at Mirpur, Dhaka. UIST
Dhaka is the first polytechnic institute of UCEP Bangladesh to provide quality higher technical education to the youth of the
country. Started in 2015, UIST currently provides diploma degree in Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Technology.

Inspiring the youth for research and study in science: Biochemistry Olympiad

As a part its commitment to enlighten the society, BRAC Bank Limited, in partnership with Dhaka University, has been organizing
Biochemistry Olympiad since 2009. The Biochemistry Olympiad inspire the young generation to pursue higher studies in
science. More than 1,000 SSC/O level and HSC/A level students from all over the country participate in the biggest festival of
bioscience in the country that is held every year at Curzon Hall premises. The Olympiad is an initiative for popularizing higher
science education and research among the young generation. Biochemistry Olympiad will definitely inspire the young generation
to pursue higher studies in science and that is instrumental for national progress. BRAC Bank puts unshakable trust on the
dreams and aspirations of the young generation and helps them realize their potential.

Social Welfare

Lifetime Support to Bir Protik Taramon Bibi:


She fought on the grounds fearlessly during our 1971 liberation war. She made great contribution in war for the independence
of the country which we proudly call home. She is one of the two women to have been accorded the ‘Bir Protik' medal as a
recognition of her bravery in the liberation war of Bangladesh. Then the management of BRAC Bank decided to provide lifetime
financial support to the valiant freedom fighter who unfortunately met with economic hardship in the recent times. As a socially
responsible organization, BRAC Bank believes that it is the least that it could for the only living “Bir Protik” woman in Bangladesh.

Taking warmth to the cold affected people: Contribution of Blankets to Prime Minister's Relief Fund:

Every year BRAC Bank Limited stands beside the less advantaged people of the society during the winter season. BRAC Bank
donated 50,000 pieces of blanket to the Prime Minister's Relief & Welfare Fund this year.
Bicycle for school girls

BRAC Bank distributed bicycles among the female students of two schools in Nilphamari as part its corporate social
responsibility. The cycles were given to ten female students of Nilphamari Govt. Girls' High School and Samir Uddin School &
College of the district. The cycle recipients are meritorious students who used to walk at least 5 kilometers to school every day.
So for them, going to school will now become easier than before.
BRAC Bank TARA stands beside the little stars of Chittagong

BRAC Bank's women forum TARA members made a financial contribution to Upalabdhi Foundation, which runs an institute for
shelter and education for the lost girls in Chittagong. The amount was raised from a fund raising ‘Bake n Sale' program by Tara
members at BRAC Bank Head Office on the occasion of International Women's Day. The initiative carried care and love of all
Tara members who believe the little donation will facilitate the welfare of the less advantaged children.

Initiative for safe drinking water for the people of former enclave
BRAC Bank Limited has embarked on an initiative to provide safe drinking water for the people of the former enclaves in the
border areas.

BRAC Bank has installed five tube wells in Dasaichara, Fulbari in Kurigram. BRAC Bank will also provide agriculture loan
facilities to the former enclave dwellers there.

BRAC Bank has responded to the call of Bangladesh Bank for ensuring overall welfare of the people of the former enclaves
by providing financial services to the unbanked people and bringing them into the banking system.

Art & Culture

Enriching Bangla literature: BRAC Bank-Samakal Shahitya Puroshkar:

BRAC Bank-Samakal Shahitya Puroshkar was launched in 2011 to inspire the writers’ community for their creative works and
to enrich Bangla literature. The literary award program has already generated interest and enthusiasm among the writers’ and
readers’ communities. The award has emerged as a prestigious literary recognition in the cultural circle of the country. The
award categories are: “Poetry and novel”, “Essay, autobiography, travel story and translation” and Young Writer’s Award. Young
Writer’s Award is dedicated in the memory of late novelist Humayun Ahmed. As a Bangladeshi Bank, BRAC Bank always comes
forward in promoting art, culture and Bangla literature. BRAC Bank and Samakal will work hand in hand to make this award the
most prestigious and coveted literary award in Bangladesh in the upcoming years.
Reliving the history: Contribution to Asiatic Society of Bangladesh for Publishing History Book

The Bank contributed to Asiatic Society of Bangladesh to publish a comprehensive history book titled 'History of Bangladesh:
Ancient and Medieval'. The book will be an authentic historical documentation and reference book for the period of Bangladesh
before 1704.

Instilling Nazrul works among the youth: The First Ever Nazrul Mela

BRAC Bank partnered with Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad to organize the first ever "BRAC Bank Nazrul Mela 2016". The Mela
took place at Bangla Academy & was open for all. This was the largest congregation of Nazrul Sangeet singers, performers and
scholars in Bangladesh. The purpose of the program was to pay a tribute to the Nazrul Singers as well as the culture they belong
to. The Mela was aimed at instilling Nazrul works among the young generation and increase the practice of Nazrul literary works.
Health

Support to National Heart Foundation Hospital, Sylhet

The Bank extended support to National Heart Foundation Hospital in Sylhet, the first fully fledged specialized cardiac hospital
in the Sylhet Region. The 100-bed hospital provides affordable cardiac healthcare services to the people of the region. The
assistance will be facilitating to buy and install the most modern cardiac treatment and rehabilitation facilities. The assistance
bears testimony to the bank's firm commitment to give back to the society it works in by standing for the cause of humanity.
Support to Bangladesh Thalassaemia Samity & Hospital

BRAC Bank has made a financial assistance to Bangladesh Thalassaemia Samity & Hospital that works for the treatment of the
thalassaemia patients and also creating awareness about the prevention of the disease. This hospital is the shelter for the poor
thalassaemia patients who cannot afford quality treatment due to the high cost involved to the treatment. Thalassemia Hospital
arranges these treatment facilities at subsidized costs for the poor patients. Daily, a minimum of 30 children take blood
transfusion facility from this hospital. Patients come from all around Bangladesh just for the treatment and guidance. BRAC
Bank’s help will support them to provide better care to the patients.
Environment:

Solarizing SME Unit Offices

BRAC Bank continues to expand its solar power capacity as it has brought new SME Offices under the renewable energy as
part of its commitment to environment. The bank has completed installation of solar panels in 149 SME Unit Offices as of in
2013. The bank is committed to bring all 400 SME Unit Offices under solar energy.

Employee Initiatives in CSR

Marathon for Humanity: DOUR


Employees of BRAC Bank run marathon every year to raise fund for supporting human cause. The raised fund is donated to a
charity. This is the first such marathon initiative by a bank in the country and is unique in serving the community. BRAC Bank
has been organizing the marathon since 2011. In 2016, the employees of BRAC Bank and its subsidiaries again took part for
the 6th time in "BRAC Bank DOUR– Marathon for Humanity”. On the occasion, the employees raised a fund of Tk. 10 lac, and
the company doubled it to Tk. 20 lac from its CSR fund. BRAC Bank donated Tk. 10 lac to Bangladesh Thalassaemia Samity &
Hospital that works for the treatment of the thalassaemia patients and also creating awareness about prevention of the disease.

Taking warmth to the needy people during winter:

BRAC Bank distributed blankets among the cold affected people in the four districts of the country. Senior officials of the bank
in assistance with the local administration distributed 15,000 blankets in five places of Nilphamari, Kurigram, Khulna and
Barguna. The blankets benefited the less advantaged people as it was distributed at the very beginning during the winter season.
The initiative carries the warmth of more than 7,000 employees who raised funds to donate blankets for the less advantaged
people of our country.

2. SHAHJALAL ISLAMI BANK LIMITED
The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is based on the idea that not only Government policy
but also companies have obligation to benefit the society. CSR is seen as a concept in which companies
voluntarily integrate social and environmental concerns into their business operations and into the
interaction with their stakeholders. As a matter of fact, over the last few decades, corporations in the
developed economics have moved to ‘Social Responsibility Approach’ from classical ‘Profit Maximizing
Approach’ where businesses are not only responsible to its stakeholders but also to the society as a whole
in a broader inclusive sense. The idea of being a socially responsible company means doing more than
complying with the legal and regulatory requirments. Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited (SJIBL) being one of
the best corporate citizen of the country, has been discharging its responsibilities for the well-being of the
community where the bank is doing its business directly through its banking activities and through
Shahjalal Islami Bank Foundation, since its inception. The theme of such responsibility has been envisaged
in the mission of the Bank since the day of establishment.

SHAHJALAL ISLAMI BANK FOUNDATION Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a form of


corporate self-regulation integrated into a business model. CSR policy functions as a built-in, self-
regulating mechanism whereby business monitors and ensures its active compliance with the spirit of the
law, ethical standards and international norms. The goal of CSR is to embrace responsibility for the
company’s actions and encourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers,
employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere. With a view to and
also for the welfare of the community, to this perspective, Bank has established “Shahjalal Islami Bank
Foundation”.

The main objectives of Shahjalal Islami Bank foundation are:

 To provide health-care to poor and distressed peoples.

 To provide education support to meritorious but poor students through scholarship award.

 To provide financial assistance to people affected by flood, cyclone or disaster.

 To support humanitarian.

 To provide financial assistance to develop culture and sports of the country.

 To participate in social and environmental activities.

RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS COMMUNITY The Bank is very much conscious regarding its
responsibility towards the communities within which it operates. The most important contribution of the
Bank in this regard is the creation of employment opportunities in its financed projects as well as in its
own organization. At present about 2,191 employees are working in the bank. Apart from this, it takes
several programs in order to improve the lives of the people especially to the less fortunate segments of
the community. Bank’s strategy towards discharging community responsibility focuses on: (1) Health, (2)
Education, (3) Sports, Arts & Culture, (4) Women Empowerment and (5) Humanitarian Assistance etc.

Health Health is one of the prime parameters to achieve Millennium Development Goal (MDG). The
need for health care is increasing everyday due to rapid growth of population. Shahjalal Islami Bank
Limited has always been involved in projects for improvement in health sector. SJIBL has been contributing
by donating different health care institutions, fianancial assistance to underprivileged & poor people,
health & well being of the women and children and adoption and maintenance of healthy lifestyle etc. As
a good corporate citizen we always feel that it is our duty to stand by the people who are suffering or in
difficulties. SJIBL extended financial support to the distressed people of the country during the year 2016
by donating Tk. 1 million for their medical treatment.

Education Education is a pre-requisite for the overall development of the country. Keeping this view in
mind, Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited has long been practicing CSR in education. Awarding scholarship to
meritorious students in need of financial aid, helping development of educational infrastructural facilities,
providing essential educational equipment etc. are some of the aspects included in the program. The Bank
has distributed scholarship amounting to Tk. 1.25 crore in the year 2016 to poor but meritorious student
with outstanding result in secondary school and higher secondary examinations to facilitate them for
pursuing their higher studies without hindrance. The program of this education award will continue every
year. Despite scholarship, the Bank also extended financial support and donation during the year 2016
valuing Tk 22 million in Education for the development of education and establishment of Computer Lab
with a view to built Digtal Bangladesh in line with the Vision 2021 of Bangladesh Government.

Sports, Arts & Culture Over the years, Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited has been contributing for the
development of sports, arts and culture in Bangladesh which includes donation to different cultural
institutions, financial assistance to talents, promoting cultural activities etc. As a part of the Bank’s CSR
activities, Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited donated Tk. 2.5 million to ICCBangladesh during the year 2016 for
expansion of its office space.

Women Empowerment SJIBL is very much conscious about the prevailing conditions of the women
in our society. Keeping this in view, it takes various programs during the year 2016 for empowering the
women like awareness building, training, financing etc.

Humanitarian Assistance Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited seeks to demonstrate firm commitment
towards the community by being vigilant towards identifying and supporting causes that will facilitate the
upliftment/betterment of the society. The primary focus of the Bank is towards communities where public
and private sector services are inadequate as a result of geographical or social isolation or because of
insufficient demand levels. In the year 2016, SJIBL took different initiatives to create effective intervention
and mitigation of disaster in Bangladesh. Like earlier, the bank distributed 50,350 pcs blanket valuing Tk
1.52 Crore to cold striken people throughout the country during the year 2016. This year Bank has also
donated handsome amount to two affected families of BDR tragedy, as part of its commitment.

RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS ENVIRONMENT The main theme of environmental responsibility


is to create ‘No Harm’ to the environment in order to remain it healthy for future generation. Recently,
the issue of climatic change is being addressed seriously all over the world. It is identified that Bangladesh
being a southern delta is under serious threat of natural disaster. In view of the above, the corporations
are recommended to pay due attention to the followings:

 To reduce the use of non-renewable energy & materials (electricity, gas, fuel, paper, stationeries etc.)
and to increase use of renewable or recyclable energy & materials (solar power, bio-gas, electronic media
of communication etc.)

 Reduction of the emission of industrial carbon.

 Scrutiny of negative impacts of the corporations on environment and taking necessary mitigating
measures there against. SJIBL, being a responsible Bank, has taken numerous initiatives in this regard.

Contribution to national exchequer Being a responsible and tax abiding corporate citizen,
Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited regularly pays corporate tax on time, sometime even before it falls due as
required and asked by the tax authority. We also deposit excise duty, withholding tax and VAT to
Government Exchequer on time that deducted from employees’ salary as well as payments to customers
and vendors.

FUTURE PLAN Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited is committed to undertake more welfare activities for the
society and people of Bangladesh in the days to come. Shahjalal Islami Bank Foundation has a planning to
establish the following projects and programs:

 Shahjalal Islami Bank International School & College.

 Shahjalal Islami Bank Hospital.

3. IFIC BANK LIMITED


IFIC is working to follow responsible business practices in all of its functions and operations and will strive
to implement the same at its stakeholders, beneficiaries and other business partners. Poverty reduction,
improvement of health, increase in education level especially of the poor, and minimizing socioeconomic
inequalities have been the major focus of IFIC’s CSR agenda. Bangladesh is frequently hit by disasters,
particularly cyclones, floods, mud slides and droughts. IFIC Bank Ltd., like other banks in Bangladesh, made
a large expenditure in disaster relief because of ‘Sidr’ and ‘Aila’ in the year 2007 and 2009.

Corporate Social Responsibility: Our Bank undertook following activities in the field of CSR in 2016:

1. IFIC Bank provided blankets to Prime Minister’s Relief Fund and also distributed blankets among poor
people in different parts of the country through bank branches. The Bank also made donations to the said
Fund through Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB).

2. The Bank rewarded two winners for IFIC Bank Shahittyo Purosker.

3. The Bank handed over a donation to establish PROYASH School in Rangpur.


4. The Bank provided money for the IFIC Bank Trust Fund in Dhaka University from where students and
teachers will receive stipends and research grants every year.

5. Biswashahitya Kendra received a donation to run a programmed for college students.

6. The Bank donated 40 bicycles to female students of Dalit-Harijon Community in Jessore district.

7. PFDA-Vocational Training Centre received financial assistance for imparting education and training to
autistic children.

8. The Bank provided a fund to Bangladesh Shooting Sports Federation for development of the shooting
game.

9. The Bank donated tube-wells for inhabitants of former enclave at Panchaghar.

10. IFIC Bank donated money to run a Day Care Centre of private banks at Motijheel C/A.

THE CITY BANK LIMITED

City Bank committed to the project “Making sense of Corporate Social Responsibility”, which will be the
umbrella for all the City Bank’s social activities. To discharge its Corporate Social Responsibilities, City Bank
supports various kinds of social activities. City Bank supports various kinds of social activities through
monetary support for sports and culture, sponsoring at various welfare events, sponsoring for education,
as well as donation and so on.

Environment

• Beautification and preserving environment at Lake Side park, Baridhara to develop an eco-friendly
society for healthy human life in collaboration with Baridhara Society.

• ‘Ajker Padma’, an environment preserving program.

• Conducting ‘Fresh Air Excursion’ programs for children.

Health

• Patronizing Bangladesh Thalasemia Hospital, Center for Rehabilitation of Paralyzed.


Disaster relief

• Conducted relief operation for ‘’Sidr’’ affected People.

• Donated to Dhaka Stock Exchange Relief Fund.

• Donated to Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for cyclone victim.

Social welfare

• Patronizing SEID Trust (Special Education for Intellectually Disabled).

DHAKA BANK LIMITED

DBL involves itself in charity, social welfare and other benevolent activities towards the promotion of the
objective of its foundation which would act as a catalyst in creating awareness on development issues and
as a facilitator for building bridges with the common goal of sustainable development of the society,
providing direct assistance to various development projects and people. Dhaka Bank Ltd. has formed a
five member CSR committee headed by the Managing Director to oversee the overall activities and
management of the CSR fund of the bank. Dhaka Bank Foundation, established in 2002 as a non-profitable,
non-governmental organization, is solely devoted to the cause of charity, social welfare and other
benevolent activities towards the promotion of the objective of the foundation. Dhaka Bank has taken the
decision to provide 2% of the pre-tax profit each year as its CSR activities.

Health
Donation of passenger lifts and two haemodialysis machines to BIRDEM Hospital and Tk. 1.2 million per
year from 2006 for supporting operating costs.

Donation of Tk. 10 million to Centre for Women and Child Health Hospital for setting up pathological
laboratory.
Setting up of a 10-bed ward at the proposed Ahsania Mission Cancer and General Hospital, sponsoring
Society for the Welfare of Autistic Children (SWAC).

Donating to Bangladesh Eye Hospital, Sponsorship for Shield Trust.

Disaster relief
Among Dhaka Bank’s contribution as corporate social responsibility, a few initiatives are donation to
Asiatic Society of Dhaka.

Relief operation for flood victims at a cost of Tk. 5.0 million.

The bank distributed 10 kg rice, 1 kg pulse, and 1 kg salt to each of the 10,000 distressed families of
Araihazar, Sirajdikhan and Belkuchi.

Social welfare
Renovation of the auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity.

Sponsoring of Anti Drug Debate Festival, Distribution of winter cloths by the employees of the bank.

Sponsoring of Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team.

Awareness creation for Road Safety, Blood Donation, Eye Donation, Prevention of AIDS.

Provided financial assistance for Educational Development Trust of Scholastica to support and nurture
academically gifted students.

Sponsorship for BADC School.

Environment
Sponsored the city beautification program initiated by Dhaka City Corporation by refurbishing

Dhaka Bank Fountain in front of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dhaka Bank Park in front of

Dhaka Bank Head Office, beautification at Jashimuddin Crossing at Uttara costing 1.5 m, and also in front
of Dhaka Bank Head Office costing 1.2 m.

DUTCH BANGLA BANK LIMITED

DBBL as a responsible corporate body has been playing a pioneering role in implementing social and
philanthropic programs to help disadvantaged people of the country. Education, healthcare, human
resource development, conservation of nature, creation of social awareness, rehabilitation of distressed
people and such other programs are some of the important areas where the bank carries out its social
and philanthropic activities. DBBL has been playing a pioneering role in implementing social and
philanthropic programs to help disadvantaged people of the country. Education, healthcare, human
resource development, conservation of nature, creation of social awareness, rehabilitation of distressed
people and such other programs to mitigate human sufferings are some of the important areas where the
bank carries out its social and philanthropic activities. Dutch-Bangla Bank Foundation, established in June
2001, carries out humanitarian activities like rehabilitation of the destitute and neglected section of the

Education

DBBL is providing scholarships to students, especially for those who cannot continue their study due to
financial constraints as well as to the meritorious and needy students every year since 2003. The bank
awards around 300 new scholarships of Tk. 1,000 per month every year along with continuing scholarships
for those studying at HSC level. So far around 745 scholarships have been awarded in this level. The
Graduation level scholarships of Tk. 2,000 per month are renewable for their entire academic period of
graduation level and about 876 scholarships have been awarded in this level. The bank also awards 50
fellowships of Tk. 5,000 per month every year to the researchers having Masters Degree and those
studying at different public universities at M. Phil, PhD or post-doctoral level. About 129 fellowships have
been awarded so far.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, DBBL donated more than Tk. 10 crore to Dhaka University for
constructing a research centre (Centre for Advanced Research in Arts & Social Science Bhaban). The
research centre, first of its kind in Bangladesh, aims to play a vital role in higher study in human and social
sciences. Researchers and scholars from home and abroad will be awarded scholarships and fellowships
for conducting higher study.

Donated to establish a modern Braille printing press to Bangladesh National Society for the Blind for
publishing Braille books for the blind students.

Donated reference books to the library of different educational institutions like BSMMU, Dhaka University
etc.

Donated a pick-up van to Botanic Garden of Bangladesh Agriculture University for collection, conservation
and utilization of rare and endangered plant species of Bangladesh etc.

Health
Cleft-lip problem is not only a health problem but it affects the whole family along with the victim. Since
2003 DBBL is working with these vulnerable groups under its Smile Brighter Program to bring back smile
on their face and to enable them to start normal life. This is a continuous program aiming to perform as
much operation possible per year. Total 5,000 poor cleft-lipped boys and girls have so far been successfully
operated across the country till date.

DBBL Foundation provides financial support for operative treatment of rural and poor women who have
been suffering from Vasico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and other related problems with a view to ensure their
healthy and productive life. A total of 86 patients have so far been successfully operated across the
country till date.

In 2008, DBBL took an initiative of conducting surgery on some 12,000 poor cataract patients across the
country. So far some 2000 poor cataract patients have so far (during 2008 & 2009) been successfully
operated across the country under the Cataract operation for underprivileged rural people program.

Under DBBL’s Medicine and nutrition support for HIV/AIDS patients program, 50 HIV/

AIDS patients including women and children are being provided with ARV (Anti-Retro-Viral) medicines,
vitamins and nutritious food supplement and clinical supports.

DBBL provides free rural medical services for rural poor people especially mother and children through
rural branches such as Shimrail, Donia, Gazipur Chowrasta, Boardbazar, Savar Bazar, Baburhat, Patherhat,
Hathazari branch etc. Medical officers are providing advices and prescriptions to poor patients of
surrounding areas of these branches.

DBBL donated generous amount of money to different health organizations for medical instruments and
medical infrastructural development such as operation theatres, laboratory, hospital building, etc.

Disaster relief

Bangladesh faces various kinds of natural calamities like cold, flood, storm, cyclone etc. in every year.
Considering the sufferings of common people DBBL has introduced following special programs for the
people of the affected areas:
Financial support for rehabilitation of land slide victims of Chittagong.

For rehabilitation of devastating flood victims.

For rehabilitation of cyclone ‘Sidr’-hit people.

Twenty lacs blankets for cold-hit people of northern region of Bangladesh.

Water purifying tablets, oral saline & Cholera saline for the Flood victims.

To ensure hygienic sanitation system DBBL provided 460 numbers of sanitary latrines for the inhabitants
of Angorpota and Dahagram enclave. DBBL also provided support for ensuring pure drinking water by
providing 50 hand tube wells for them.

Sports

DBBL provides financial support for promoting the sports and culture of Bangladesh. Some mentionable
events were:

Sponsoring inaugural Test Match between Bangladesh and India.

Financial support to Bangladesh Hockey Federation.

Sponsoring Dutch-Bangla Bank President cup Golf Tournament.

Sponsoring Dhaka Sports Carnival-2007.

Donation to Bangladesh Olympic Association.

Social welfare

For the development of the vulnerable segments of Bangladesh, DBBL assisted to rehabilitate the acid and
dowry victim women by providing one-time financial assistance for establishing small scale agro-based
rural economic enterprise to be self-reliant. Total 884 women received financial assistance from DBBL.

DBBL provides financial support for rehabilitation of physically handicapped, mental impaired, visually
impaired, hearing impaired, autistic and street children by ensuring education and vocational training.
DBBL runs mass awareness programs on different burning issues through print and electronic media.
Some remarkable issues are as follows: Save the Nation from curse of Dowry, Stop

Acid violence, Prevent Drug Abuse, Tree plantation and preservation of environment, Right of disable
children etc.

Financial support to ‘Nirapad Sarak Chai’ for helping the victims of road accident and mass campaign for
prevention of traffic accident.

City beautification and preserving environment to develop an eco-friendly society for healthy human life.
