Fifth Grade News

January 2018
*Classroom Connection*
Math: Fractions and Divisions Science:
 Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator. Solve word  Life Science – animal and plant classification, genetics
problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions (inherited vs acquired traits)
and mixed numbers.
 Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole
numbers and by unit fractions. Social Studies:
 The 3rd Nine Week Math Goal is for students to pass their Division test. If your child is  World War I
still working on their addition/subtraction or their multiplication fluency test they should  The Jazz Age
spend a minimum of 10 minutes each night practicing math facts.  The Great Depression

Reading:
 Determine more than one main idea of a text with key supportive details
 Quote accurately from a text
 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases

RAH – Read at least 15-20 minutes per night. After each book
is completed, students will record it on their log in Mrs.
Souther’s room for their 40 Book Challenge.  Honesty 
MAH & Math WS – Students should practice their math facts
at least 5 minutes per night. They also have a Math
Worksheet that is given on Monday that should be returned by

Friday to Mrs. Miller. make good choices.
