Visiting teams disliked playing in tight, noisy Salem High School gymnasium
"From an athletic standpoint, I remember my father saying how much visiting teams disliked playing in Salem. The Salem fans would be tightly packed for rows behind the railing on
the track above the gym. The noise we made was incredible. It still amazes me to think that the structure was capable of withstanding that much weight and that number of enthusiastic
Quakers!"
Michele "Mickey" Cope Weaver
Daughter of Fred E. Cope, SHS athletic director, and
Doris Shoop Cope, SHS biology teacher and later guidance counselor

Doris Shoop Cope and

Fred E. Cope met while
teaching at the high
school on 230 North
Lincoln Avenue. This is a
picture as they entered
the building for one
school day. There were
several other married
educator couples who
worked in the building
when it was a high
school and junior high
school.
