Introduction
Key LTE-A requirements

LTE-A is meant to fulfill the key IMT-A requirements.

 Spectral Efficiency: Downlink-30 bps/Hz; uplink-15 bps/Hz
 Data Rate: Downlink-1Gbps; uplink-500 Mbps
Bandwidth: Minimum 40 MHz BW and up to 100 MHz is possible
Integration: Interworking with other RAT systems
Latency: 10 ms for roundtrip packet transmission
Mobility: Up to 350 km/h mobility support
Throughput: Cell edge user throughput to be 2X that of LTE and
average user throughput to be 3X that of LTE

CoMP: Coordinated Multipoint Transmission [2, 3]

A network MIMO to improve sector and cell-edge throughput via

collaborative processing, precoding, coordinated beamforming, and
interference nulling.
Based on its location, UE may be able to transmit and receive
signals from multiple cell sites.

CoMP: Coordinated Multipoint Transmission [2, 3]

Enables dynamically coordinated transmission and reception with

multiple eNBs.
help for ICIC via coordinated message exchange among eNBs.
 It help to improve [2]:
 Coverage for high data rates
 Cell-edge throughput and
 System throughput

CoMP: Benefits [2, 3]

Help to improve QoS and network utilization.

Enhance throughput and coverage performance by reducing the
interference.
Helps to increase the User Equipment’s (UE) data rate.
Helps for universal structure of coordination and collaboration in
MIMO-OFDM

CoMP: Architecture and Scenarios
Architecture

Based on transmission/reception techniques, CoMP scenarios can be

Intra-eNB CoMP: Coordination is with in the cells. Does not require
backhaul links. Thus, large amount of data exchange is possible.
Inter-eNB CoMP: coordination of multiple sites for CoMP
transmission. Coordination among eNBs is done via the fiber/X2
interface.

CoMP:Architecture and Scenarios
Architecture [4]

Based on the network topologies and backhaul characteristics

 For homogeneous vs heterogeneous networks

CoMP:Architecture and Scenarios
Architecture

 Based on ways of coordination:

centralized and distributed architecture
 Centralized coordination
 use feedback information from eNB’s.
 Use advanced RMS techniques
 Has delay factor and backhaul
overhead
 Distributed Coordination
All neighboring eNBs trade CSI and
UE information
One of the cooperated eNB acts as a
master cell

CoMP:Architecture and Scenarios
Scenarios: Ways of Coordination, Where and How?

Coordinated position: everywhere in the cell or only at the cell

edge.
Coordinated nodes: intra-eNB and inter-eNB CoMP
 Coordination level [1, 2]:
 Coordinated scheduling(CS)/Beam forming(CB)
 Dynamic Cell Selection (DCS)
 Joint Processing (JP)

CoMP: Implementation Challenges [2, 3, 4, 5]

Require strict coordination and synchronization b/n eNBs and UEs.

Require efficient and advanced clustering techniques
Large amount of feedback data exchange that need broadband
backhaul links.
 Unavailability of complete CSI
Complex computation of joint precoding weights
Performance effects due to backhaul interface and other latencies.
