Introduction:
What are some things that your culture celebrates?
-Discuss other traditions in the communities being studied

Activities:
- Introduce words: tradition, celebration & storytelling - What do you think these words mean? Do you have an example
- Student resource: Read - highlight definitions of tradition & celebrations
- Study the photos (ask guiding questions)
- Read Linda’s text: ask students what they would ask about her city’s special days, repeat for Meeka & Michele.
Focus on Storytelling
- explain that celebrations & traditions are a way for citizen to connect to community’s past & one another
- - Read p.27
Ask students what they learned from Linda’s grandmother’s story - What did it teach about Linda’s past & where she lives
Read variety of selections of people telling their own stories (storytelling) - goal: students to appreciate storytelling as a way of
reflecting people’s many perspectives, experiences & voices - learn about a community’s time & history - model for students own
storytelling
Have students tell their own short stories to each other (making connection between community & themselves.
Inquiry: Traditions & celebrations
- review how to brainstorm questions to ask 5W + H, Have students research then film video report. Show short news
clips of reporters reporting on local festivals to help students understand the idea of this medium
- Students work on project - researching & planning news presentation of a personal traditional celebration.
Film presentation in the format of a News Report using Telestory app.

Festival: research a canadian festival - create a poster on Canva that tells about it (what, when, where)
