ST. COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH SAN DIEGO

SCHOOL NEWS
PRINCIPAL’S CORNER:

Dear Families,

On behalf of the St. Columba faculty and staff we hope that you had a blessed Christmas Season
filled with love and peace. The New Year brings a fresh beginning to all. It is our hope and best wishes
that each of you continue to be blessed with God’s goodness. We are looking forward to working with
all of our families towards making this year a successful and prosperous one for St. Columba. Together,
as one community, we can continue to strengthen and cultivate a bright and sustaining future for our
school.
The Bishop Flores Scholarship Fund is open from January 1 – February 28, 2018. There are many
families who are in need of financial assistance and the foundation is limited to its funds. Therefore I
highly encourage all of you who are applying to do so as soon as possible. You may apply at http://
www.bishopfloresscholars.org/tuition-assistance. Once you apply for the Bishop Flores Scholarship you
do not need to apply for tuition assistance for St. Columba through FACTS.
As the new year begins please keep in mind that it is St. Columba’s wish to be able to provide as
much tuition assistance as possible to our families in need. The tuition assistance we provide through our
school is limited. One of the major ways we give assistance is through funds earned through BINGO. This
is why it is important that each family volunteer to work BINGO during the month their class is
assigned. The reality is that we need each family to support BINGO so that St. Columba can continue
improving its curriculum to its students and to provide tuition assistance to those families in need.
May God Bless you with a Happy New Year!
In Christ,
Ms. Navarro

STAR TESTING: Starting Monday, January 8th grades K- 8 will begin Star Testing. Testing is from
January 8th through Friday, January 26th. The best way to prepare students for the test is to insure a
good night’s sleep and to provide a healthy breakfast. Mornings are dedicated for testing; please
do not schedule appointments during testing periods. Please remember testing is just one tool a
teacher uses as an indicator of what the children know and how the teacher can best fine tune the
curriculum to meet the child’s needs.

CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to Teresa Temprendola and Jack Hightower who were chosen
to receive the Leadership Awards at Cathedral Catholic High School on Wednesday, January 17th.
Each year two eighth grade students are chosen from each of our Diocesan schools for this honor.

6TH GRADE SPAGHETTI FUNDRAISER DINNER: We welcome you to join us Saturday, January 27th from
4:30 – 8:30 am for a great spaghetti dinner while enjoying great company and lots of family fun by
helping to support our 6th grade camp fundraiser. Look for the order form coming home today with
your child.

OPEN HOUSE: St. Columba School will be hosting an Open House on Sunday, January 28, 2017 from
10:30 am - 12:30 pm for families with children from Preschool through 8th grade. We invite the Serra
Mesa and surrounding communities to come and take a tour of the school and meet our principal
and dedicated faculty. St. Columba is going on its 55th year of providing quality Catholic education
to its students. The charisma of the school has always been its family-friendly community and
dedication to its students. As is evident, this school has been a labor of love since its beginning and
still remains apparent. St. Columba offers a solid academic program and takes pride in our students
and graduates that have grown into successful and productive citizens who have confidently met
the challenges of living a Christ-centered life in an ever changing world.
Registration will open up the end of January. For further information please contact the school
office M-F from 7:30-3:30 at (858) 279-1882. You can also visit our website at stcolumbaschool.org/.
