POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Fall Year : 2007

Programme: BE Full Marks : 100
Course: Basic Electronics Engineering Time : 3hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.
1. a) Describe intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductor in brief. 8
b) Explain V-I characteristics of PN junction diodes. 7
2. a) Explain transistor as an amplifier. Why CE configuration is preferred 8
over other configurations?
b) For the common base circuit shown determine I C and VCB. Assume 7
transistor to be of Si.

1.2 K RC RE=1.5K

18V 8V=VEE
VCC

3. a) With the help of circuit diagram, explain the working principle of full 8
wave rectifier.
b) Why is an oscillator used? What is the required condition for an 7
oscillation? Explain sinusoidal oscillator in brief.
4. a) What do you mean by an ideal Op-amp? Deduce the expression for the 3+5
output voltage in inverting amplifier.
b) Calculate the currents I, Iz and IL from the circuit shown below. Compare 7
Iz calculated and Iz(max). How will these values be affected if source
voltage is increased to 70V? Neglect Zener resistance.
5. a) State De Morgan’s theorem and verify it by truth table. 7
b) Perform the following conversions: 8
i) (2A BD8)16 = (?)10
ii) (85.32)10 = (?)2
iii) (10110110111)2 = (?)16
iv) (F5C.2B)16 = (?)8
6. a) What do you mean by modulation? Why is it necessary in 7
communication system? List out the advantages of frequency
modulation over amplitude modulation.
b) Why is CRT considered as a heart of Oscilloscope? Draw and explain 8
the general block diagram of CRO.
7. Write short notes on (Any Two): 2×5
a) FET
b) Fixed Bias Method
c) -Filter
