Mrs. Ash’s 1st Grade Class

Subject Area Snapshot...

Reading: Readers read, process and think about informational text.
Readers study the pictures and connect them to the text. Readers make a picture in their mind to under-
stand what is happening. Readers react to information presented in books and ask questions about the text
as they read.
Writing: Writers choose topics, rehearse and write lots and lots of books.
Writers are checking their steps for clarity. Writers are adding clear and precise pictures and words to help
readers understand directions. Writers are making sure they include a title, list of materials, steps, and pic-
tures to help their readers learn.
Math: Solving Story Problems
We finished our current unit on addition, subtraction, and the number system. Students worked on recognizing
when a story problem needs to use addition or subtraction to figure out the answer. Students really enjoyed
making counting strips and seeing how high they could write their numbers!
Social Studies: How Do We Learn About Places?
We discussed absolute and relative location. You should be receiving a letter in the mail today or tomorrow
from your child. They were supposed to write a letter to someone that lives in their house. Their address is
their absolute location.

Happy Birthday!
