Travel to Emerson
The Hydrocarbon and Energy Industry
Center office is located at 7175 12th
Street SE. We occupy two buildings
situated between 11 and 12th Street,
divided by a parking lot.
The east building has three floors,
which we commonly call the first, sec-
ond, and third floors. The main recep-
tion desk is located on the first floor.
The west building has two main floors,
which we call the fourth and fifth floors
as if we occupied a single building. Our
shipping and receiving desk is located
on the fourth floor of the west building.
The basement of this building is used to
store archived paper documents.
Our office provides all the amenities
you’d expect, plus more, including a
gym and racket ball court and lunch
facilities on each floor.
For time out of the office, one of Can-
ada’s largest open air regional shopping
centers, Deerfoot Meadows, is
just across the street. The center
provides endless choices for
retail stores and restaurants—all
available to suit your tastes.
For employees who like to get
some exercise or maybe just
some fresh air on their lunch
breaks, the Fish Creek Provincial
Park is only minutes away. Fish
Creek Provincial Park is one of
the largest urban wilderness
parks in the world, and provides
over 54 miles of trails for hiking,
biking, and running.

Travel in the City

Getting directions in Calgary is easy
once you understand the lingo! The city
is split into four quadrants
(NE, NW, SE, and SW).
Center street divides the
east-west direction and the
Bow River divides the north-
south direction. Avenues run
east-west and Streets run
north-south.
So, "1014 - 14th Ave SW"
tells you immediately that
the address is in the SW quadrant, is
on 14th avenue, and is between 9th and
10th street. The quadrant is important
or you may find yourself at the correct
address but on the wrong side
of the city!
The C-Train is Calgary's
above-ground, Light Rail Tran-
sit (LRT) system. The system
is cheap, clean, efficient, and
safe. Adult fares are $2.25
(one-way) and may be pur-
chased at automatic kiosks
located at each train stop.
However, the C-Train is free if you are
travelling within the downtown core
(between the 10th SW and 3rd St. SE
stops). It is operated on the honor
system so you just buy a ticket and get
on the train (security occasionally
checks to see if people bought their
tickets and hands out hefty fines to
those that didn’t!).
Calgary is a wide-open, car-friendly city.
Driving and parking pretty well any-
where is not difficult. However, Calgary
is also a city that has enjoyed explosive
growth, and our one million inhabitants
share a road system designed for half
that number.

The Alberta Education System

Public education is provided free of
charge to all Canadian citizens and per-
manent residents under 20 years of age
until the end of secondary school. In
Alberta, students are required to at-
tend school from ages 6 to 16.
The Government of Alberta encour-
ages a broad range of community con-
sultation and involvement with the
school system to enhance learning op-
portunities for children and to meet
their education needs.

and virtual programs offered by school
boards and home education. They may
also choose to send their children to

The Calgary Housing Market
The Calgary housing market is a great
place to invest. The average price of
homes in Calgary has increased significantly
in the last year, but continues to be less
than that of average house prices in
Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa.
And the reason for this increase? The oil
and gas industry. Calgary is the oil capital of
Canada. In fact, according to the Canadian
Association of Petroleum Producers, Al-
berta has the largest recoverable crude-oil
reserves outside of the Middle East. Cal-
gary is home to virtually all active explo-
ration and development companies, and
most service companies.
Calgary is booming economically, and has
been experiencing a huge influx of peo-
ple. Unemployment levels are low and
people are relocating to the city in
droves.
