NATIONAL DISASTER RISK REDUCTION AND MANAGEMENT CENTRE

Cyclone Warning Class I

The Mauritius Meteorological Services in its cyclone bulletin at 16h10 today Monday 15 January
2018, has issued a cyclone warning class I for Mauritius as Tropical Cyclone ‘BERGUITTA’ was
centered at about 590 km to the East North East of Mauritius.

There are indications that it will move slowly in a general West North West direction later during the
night. Thereafter, it is expected to start moving towards the South West and this trajectory will bring the centre in
the vicinity of Mauritius. In this scenario tropical cyclone 'BERGUITTA' represent a threat to Mauritius.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) is consultation with
concerned authorities is informing the general public to take all precautionary measures.

Ensure that you have initiated all the following preparedness actions:

- Secure all loose items which may pose a risk during high winds;
- Inform authorities if there are any trees/ branches which may affect your house on hotlines
999 or 115;
- Removed all debris and obstructions in your drainage system;
- Ensure that all openings are properly secured and fastened to avoid damage and injuries;
- Remain listening to the radios and television at all times;
- If you are in immediate danger, call the authorities on emergency lines (Police on 999 and
Fire Services on 115 and SAMU on 114);
- Keep a provision of dry food, drinking water and candles;
- Ensure that you have all emergency equipment at hand (portable radio, essential tools, dry
batteries and chargers, etc);
- Do not venture outdoor during adverse weather conditions;
- All electrical appliances are switched off and disconnected from main supply;
- Do not venture at sea and lagoons or near coastal areas at risk;
- Do not venture near rivers, canals, streams and areas prone to flooding, landslide, rockfall
and water accumulations;
- Do not cross flooded bridges or sub-merged areas by foot or by vehicle;
- Road users are to be cautious due to fog and poor visibility, water accumulations,
slippery road conditions and strong gusts;
- Avoid using underground passes and parking;
- Do not park vehicles along road side and open drains;
- Listen attentively to the advice of the authorities on the radio;
- Fishing community to remove fishing boats at sea before bad weather;
- Secure loose items vulnerable to flying such as corrugated iron sheets etc;
- Avoid dumping in drains, canals and water courses.

The general public is advised to follow the guidance given by the concerned authorities.
