2. LITERATURE SURVEY
Before discussing in details of literature survey, lets us define some of the basic terms used.

2.1 BASIC TERMS

The basic terms used in the report are explains as follow

2.1.1 Encryption and Decryption

In cryptography, encryption is defined as an encoded messages or information which is read

only by authorized parties. Encryptions do not prevent itself for interception but denies
message content to interceptor. In encryption scheme message or information are referred to
plaintext and is encrypted by encryption algorithm to generate ciphertext which can only be
read by decrypted process. Encryption scheme uses a pseudo random key generated by
algorithm which is key used to encrypt or decrypt data. Authorized recipient can easily
decrypt message with key provided by originator to recipients but not to unauthorized
interceptors.

In short Encryption is the process of translating plain text data (plaintext) into
something that appears to be random and meaningless (ciphertext). Decryption is the process
of converting ciphertext back to plaintext.

2.1.2 Traditional Encryption in Cloud Storage

As the data is stored in public cloud, .i.e. the data if as it is placed is not too safe. To protect
the data stored in cloud so encryption most be used so that the data is kept as cipher text
instead of plan text.

But for the condition checking of deduplication data already stored most be check,
but the data is in cipher text with some user key with will be unknown for the checking of
data for duplication purpose. So this traditional encryption method is not able to detect the
duplication in cloud storage as shown in Figure 2.1
