ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems Lead Auditor Course–Scenario 6

SCENARIO 6: AUDITING LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

In this scenario, the auditor will examine the ability of the Livonia facility to identify and meet its
legal requirements. The auditee is the Environmental Management Representative.

The auditee should have the following documents from the AEG Case Study to present to the
auditor if requested:

1. AEG Spill Plan (SP-100)

2. Objectives and Targets table
3. EMS Performance Metrics
4. Thompson Environmental Engineering Email

Below are specific instructions for the auditee:

Environmental Management Representative (EMR): Sally Johnson

At AEG, you feel overworked, under appreciated, and you are currently looking for a new job.
You have done most of the work to implement the EMS, even though the implementation “team”
was supposed to be involved. You are also he Environmental, Health and Safety Manager, but
the EHS/Safety Coordinator, Meg Ransom, was assigned the task of overseeing the care of the
legal and regulatory requirements on a daily basis, and you do not discuss anything on these
topics. You are very proud of the system that is in place, but you are weak on the regulatory
specifics.

A group, Thompson Environmental Engineering, conducts annual environmental reviews, and

they provide a report that summarizes new or changed requirement impacting AEG operations
over the short-term.

You know and volunteer that AEG has an Air Permit, NPDES Permit, and a Storm water
Discharge Permit, but you do not have any documentation to show the auditor if they ask.
Your files are in good shape and you refer all questions to the ESH/Safety Coordinator,
Meg Ransom.
