Overview

IBM Ultrium 8 12 TB data cartridges deliver flexibility in the specification and

ordering of prelabeled and bulk packaged data cartridges for the IBM LTO Ultrium
TM

family of products. Shipping with or without jewel cases can also be specified when
prelabeled cartridges are ordered.

Ultrium tape format is the implementation of the Linear Tape-Open (LTO)

TM

technology that is designed to provide high capacity and performance with

exceptional reliability in either a stand-alone or automated environment. It uses
a single-reel cartridge and is ideal for large volume backup, restore, and archive
applications.

New models of the 3589 are available to be ordered with the IBM Ultrium 8 12 TB
Data Cartridge. The Ultrium 8 12 TB format is based on LTO technology and delivers
tape cartridge capacities of up to 12 TB native physical capacity (30 TB with 2.5 to
1 compression). These cartridges can be used in IBM LTO Ultrium 8 tape drives, the
eighth-generation LTO Ultrium Tape Drive in the IBM LTO Ultrium family of products.

Ultrium LTO 8 5-pack plain data cartridge option is also available.

This product is only for use with Ultrium 8 tape drives.

Description

The 3589 Ultrium Tape Cartridge provides the ability to order prelabeled or bulk-
packaged IBM Ultrium 8 12 TB data cartridges, IBM Ultrium cleaning cartridges, and
IBM Ultrium 12 TB tape cartridges.

The 3589 models (552 and 652) double the tape cartridge capacity with up to 12 TB
native capacity (30 TB with 2.5 to 1 compression). These cartridges can be used in
IBM LTO Ultrium 8 tape drives, the eighth-generation LTO Ultrium Tape Drive in the
IBM LTO Ultrium family of products:
• Model 552 -IBM Ultrium 8 12 TB Data Cartridge in a 20-pack are labeled with
starting volume serial information and optionally packed in individual jewel cases
• Model 652 -IBM Ultrium 8 12 TB Data Cartridge in a 20-pack or a 5-pack are
optionally packed in individual jewel cases

Features of the IBM Ultrium 8 12 TB Data Cartridge include:

• 12 TB native capacity in a single compact cartridge
• Cartridge memory built into every data cartridge for enhanced functionality and
media reliability by storing access history and media performance information for
use by the tape drive every time the cartridge is accessed
• Color coding and prelabeling with the ability to specify a starting volume serial
saves time and labor when adding new cartridges into your existing inventory
• Shipping without jewel cases unless otherwise specified, when prelabeled
cartridges are ordered

The data recorded on the cartridge has a minimum archive storage life of 30 years
with less than 5% loss in demagnetization when the cartridge is stored at 16°C to
25°C, 20%, to 50% noncondensing humidity and wet bulb temperature of 26°C
maximum.

Hardware requirements
The 3589 provides labeled or unlabeled data cartridges for Ultrium Tape Drive
products. The 3589 models 552 and 652 are IBM Ultrium 8 12 TB data cartridges for
use on the Ultrium 8 Tape Drive products.

For unlabeled cartridges

Order Model 652 with the quantity specified by feature number 6502 (20 cartridges
per feature ordered) or feature number 6506 (5 cartridges per feature ordered).

For labeled cartridges

Order Model 552 with the quantity specified by feature number 5502 (20 cartridges
per feature ordered).

Note: The Jewel Case feature (#8000) is required for model 652, and is optional for
model 552 but is recommended to protect media in transit.

For the label, also specify the following:

• Alpha character label background options: Select either Color/Vibrant (#9022) or
White (#9077) for the background for alpha characters in the VOLSER label.
• Alpha character VOLSER color choices: If the Color/Vibrant feature (#9022) is
selected or the Unicolor feature (#9097), then any of ten background colors
are available (#9003 to #9012) for the Alpha characters selected. The same
background color will be on all the Alpha characters.
• Starting VOLSER sequence number: The starting sequence number for labeled
