Social Studies: Chapter 3 Lesson 3 The Revolution

Teacher: Mr. Groff Grade Level: 4th


I. Content and Standards:
5.2.4.B: Describe the sources of conflict and disagreement and different ways conflict can be
resolved.
5.3.4.F: Explain how different perspectives can lead to conflict.
5.3.4.G: Identify individual interests and explain ways to influence others.
6.1.4.A: Identify scarcity of resources in a local community.
8.4.4.D: Distinguish between conflict and cooperation among groups and organizations that
impacted development of the history of the world.
II. Prerequisites:
Students will have a basic understanding of the events leading up to the American Revolution
and the major parties involved.
III. Essential Questions
- How did Pennsylvania first feel about the Revolution & what was their role?
- Distinguish between a Loyalist and a Patriot.
- What individuals and Pennsylvania locations played a major role in the Revolution?
IV. Instructional Objective:
Students will describe important leaders of the American Revolution, noting those with
particular relevance to PA; identify and discuss important events of the American
Revolution.
V. Instructional Procedures:
I. Students will review & discuss the vocabulary words provided at the beginning of
the chapter and participate in a discussion on what they think the definitions are.
II. Students will then preview the lesson by paging through the reading, discussing
major headings with a partner and hypothesizing what will happen.
III. Students will then share their opinions of the reading with the class and then read the
lesson objective out loud to the class.
IV. Teacher will play the corresponding BrainPop Video that goes along with the lesson
to provide the students with the necessary background knowledge of the historical
events.
V. Students will partner up and share/discuss what they have learned from the video.
VI. Teacher will then lead and select different students to read the section out loud to the
class, stopping at points throughout the text where identified vocabulary words and
review questions appear. Attempt to make connections to previous lessons.
VII. Students will watch a movie clip from “The Patriot”, which portrays various
viewpoints of the colonists to go to war with Britain.
VIII. The lesson may need to be split into two days (halfway through the lesson
reading). Post Tests & Extend Activity are completed upon finishing the entire group
reading.
VI. Materials and Equipment: Individual student textbooks, student notebooks for vocabulary,
projector, BrainPop program (provided online)
VII. Assessment/Evaluation:
I. Vocabulary: revolution, Loyalist, Patriot
II. Lesson Review Questions
III. Chapter 3 Lesson 3 Review/PostTest
IV. Extend: Writing a Letter Activity: Students will write a short letter as if they were a
soldier at Valley Forge, describing the weather conditions and how they feel.
Movie Clip: Students will watch a meeting between the Continental Congress from
“The Patriot”
VIII. Differentiation:
Struggling students will be able to either work with a partner on the extend activity or the
teacher will provide possible ideas through a conversation with the student.

X. Self-Assessment Teacher will review completed lesson post test, analyze discussion
responses, and review the extend activity responses. Did the students understand the lesson
