G200 –2, North Oregon Coast, 1 Credit, Mar 9, 10, 2018 Carlson, PSU,

This is a field course to study the North Oregon Coastal


geology. Explore the evidence of tectonic earthquakes and
the 1700 tsunami, Coastal Erosion, and mitigation!

Moderate hiking is required. Transportation is included in


registration fee.

 Geology of the West Hills, Glacial Flood Evidence In Route
 Overview of Netarts Bay at Cape Lookout, bathrooms
 Netarts-Coring of Netarts Bay, Tsunami Deposits
 Cape Meares - liquefaction, Pleistocene terrace, deposits, Landsliding,
 Oswald West State Park, Turbidites, Eocene Ocean Shales (Hike) Lunch
 Seaside-Coastal Hazards Tsunami Evidence, Mitigation
 6:30-approximately PSU1

Assignment: Using the handouts, field notes and online resources, write a 3-5-page paper and
answer the following questions.

 What would be a possible sequence of events in a major earthquake along the Oregon
Washington Coast?
 What kinds of mitigation should be taken to protect life and property?

-Use 12-pitch Times font, standard 1-1/2 margins, double-spaced. Use at least 3 sources
including Oregon Geology, Volume 55, #5, 9/93, online encyclopedias, and USGS Web pages.

On-line papers are due by 5 PM, Friday, March 23,2018 to scarlson@pdx.edu. I will email you
notifications and results.

Grade Breakdown, 70% required to pass. Lecture attendance and participation 20%, Active Field
trip attendance, 40 %, Paper 40%
