1. Introduction
The world’s economy is increasingly global wherein the international aspect of managing
business has become a foremost challenge for some organizations. The simple principles
of management are common, but they are frequently understood and applied contrarily in
other parts of the world as industries currently operate in an international atmosphere. As a
result, the area of International Management (IM) is becoming more vital within the
academic background. By studying International Management you will examine how
business organizations function in an international setting and gain an understanding of the
growth and application of strategy, managerial undertakings, and organizational problems
relating to cross-border activities. Also, you will able to acquire different cultural and
ethical issues practice of business around the world. It requires knowledge and abilities
above and beyond the standard business know-how, such as acquaintance with the business
principles of the nations in which the organization operates, understanding of local
customs and laws, and the capability to conduct transactions that may involve multiple
currencies.
During the program, the participants acquired in depth knowledge about key theories and
concepts relating to International Management and strategy, and multinational enterprises
that gave them an insight of globalization with a particular focus on the topics discussed
and as follows: Entrepreneurship Management, Entrepreneurial Marketing & Retailing;
Supply Chain Management and Information Technology in Business; and Customer
Relationship Management. Besides, the participants were engaged into a teambuilding to
promote the camaraderie among them.
2. Program Description
The program was according designed; but, considering the perimeter of time for the
program, the places to visit were selected to cover the areas of concern in the program. The
complete schedule of this program is at Annex A-2. At the end of the training program,
participants were asked to complete pertinent evaluation forms which were summarized.
There were 48 participants from different organizations in Sri Lanka in their different lines
of duty. The list of participants is in Annex A-1.
4. Resource Persons in the Program
The Resource persons in the visits were mainly the officers in charge of specific concerns
where information was requested. The classroom session facilitators were mainly from the
Faculty of Business Administration, Kasetsart University, one invited Lecturer from
Chulalongkorn University, and the Executive Vice President of PTT Public Co. Ltd. The
list of Facilitators is in Annex A-3.
The program design was based on the outline of content provided by the Director of
Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) University of Sri Jayewardenepura contained
in his letter of proposal, augmented with details by consulting specialists in the Faculty of
Business Administration, KU, which covered: Entrepreneurship Management,
Entrepreneurial Marketing & Retailing; Supply Chain Management and Information
Technology in Business; and Customer Relationship Management.
Emphasizing the theoretical overviews and the topics were presented, study tours form an
important part of the training methodology utilized by the Faculty of Business
Administration. Participants were able to relate what has been seen and discussed in the
training program with actual examples. Under this program a study visit was planned to
provide relevant experiences.
6. Schedule of Activities
The participants indicated that taxation and Service Legal Agreement were most useful to
them in developing their knowledge, skills and confidence during the seminar.
Table 2 presents the Aspects of Seminar Organization and Management. It was revealed
that despite of the duration of the training course was limited only for 7 days majority of
the participants rated the pace of seminars (14 (47%) and open to questions as highest (5).
The higher (4) scale are as follows: delivery and seminar style 19 (63%), quality of
information presented 18 (60%), organization and flow 15 (50%), and knowledge of topic
16 (53%).
Table 3 shows the aspects of the training program, it was reflected that majority 29 (66%)
of the participants agree that they met the training expectations, majority or 29 (66%) of
the participants agree that the training provides good information, and 25 (57%) of the
participants agree that the training improved their skills and materials were practical.
It was shown in Table 4 the rate of the presenter, it was reflected that majority of the
participants strongly agree in all criteria and as follows: held their interest to the presenter
17 (57%); presentation was organized 19 (63%); the information was presented
effectively19 (63%); and the presenter answered questions adequately 23 (77%). Lastly,
out of 30 (100%) participants answered that they were satisfied in terms of the seminar
room and the support staff.
Globalization has required a great deal of efforts, skills and possessions from the field of
management–in both private and public contexts and developed and developing countries–
to make participants from Sri Lankans capable of dealing with this new reality the seminar
“International Program in Management” in Thailand was designed to give them an insight
and experiences.
The results of this assessment reinforce the relevancy and importance of International
Program in Management. The positive aspects of the program can be replicated or
incorporated in existing similar situations in their country and can be applied when they
back home. While the participants were satisfied on the inputs, process and outputs of the
program, there is always room for improvement. There was a harmonizing sharing of
responsibilities among the training management, the participants and the organizer. It was
a very satisfying working relationship.
