2.4.4.1 Considerations for Coating

C A corrosion allowance is not required for anchor bolts that are galvanized or
a coated. Anchor bolts that are not galvanized or coated should have a minimum
)r corrosion allowance of 118 inch (3 mm) added to their diameter.

All types of protective coatings should be periodically inspected and maintained

ts to prevented corrosion from reducing the design capacity of the anchor bolt
IS assembly.
~s

Anchor bolts should be kept free of accumulations of excess materials or debris

that may contain or trap moisture around anchors. Concrete surfaces should be

,n
I sloped to drain water. Avoid details which will create pockets, crevices, and faying
surfaces that can collect and accumulate water, debris, and other damp materials
around the anchor bolt.

Foundations located in areas with a high ground-water table are highly

susceptible to corrosion. The diameter of anchor bolts exposed to surface drainage
is or ground water should be increased a minimum of 118 inch (3 mm) for corrosion
)t protection unless a protective coating is provided.
6
The surfaces between base plates and the concrete and/or grout pads should be
sealed to prevent the infiltration of corrosive elements. Cement-sand, dry-pack grout
a pads should be coated or sealed in areas with cyclic wet-dry environments.

The service life of a combined system of paint over galvanizing is substantially

greater than the sum of lives of the individual coatings. Precautions must be taken to
ensure adherence of the paint to the galvanized surface, which is smooth and does
Ir not permit mechanical locking of the coating film.
n
i, 2.4.4.2 ASTM A153, Hot Dip Zinc
e
Galvanizing with a hot-dip zinc process provides a cost-effective and
maintenance-free corrosion protection system for most general applications.
Precautions against embrittlement should be taken by the designer, the fabricator,
and the galvanizer in accordance with recommended practice in ASTM AJ43. A
coating weight of I to 2.5 ounces/square foot (0.3-0.75 kg/m 2 ) is normal for the hot-
a dip process. A recommended thickness of 2.3 ounces/square foot (0.7 kg/m 2) is an
:t average application requirement. A corrosion allowance should not be required or
e added to galvanized anchor bolts.
