Broaching in PartMaker
Introduction

This tech-note will describe the procedure to follow when the user wishes to
broach in PartMaker.

Note: Not all Posts are set up for Broaching. If you set up a broaching tool and do not get the output you
require, please contact Tech Support at 215-643-5077.

Directions for Broaching in PartMaker:

Making the Tool:

1. Choose the Tools command from the Tool Minder menu.


2. Click the New button to create a New Tool
3. Set the Type to Drill.
4. Set the Orientation to X tool or Z tool.
5. Set the Diameter to the Diameter of the Broach.
6. Set the Included Angle to 180 degrees to give you a flat bottom.
7. If this Broach does not require the spindle to be turning then set the Speed Factor to
0.
8. Place a note to yourself in the Notes: field. Click Apply
9. Name Your Tool. Click Apply.

Making the Cycle:

1. Choose the Cycles command from the Tool Minder menu.


2. Click the New button to create a New Cycle.
3. Set the Operation Type for every tool in the order you want them to run. Set the
Operation Type for Broach to Drill.
4. Set the Canned Cycles to what you want the Tools to do. Set the Canned Cycle for
Broach to DRILL.
5. Set the Diameters to match the tools or process. Set the Broach Diameter to the
Diameter you used in the Tool Data.
6. Decide weather you are using the Cycle for, Mill or Turn. We use Turn in this
example. If you construct a cycle for Mill you will have to choose between X and Z
tools
7. Push the Select Tools button to select your tools.
8. Set the Radio Button on the Left to be next to the Broach Tool that will be your
Major Tool.
9. Name you’re Cycle, Click Apply.
10. Click Close when done.

Drawing the Geometry:

1. In CAD mode, draw geometry you require for your Broached hole as you would for a
regular drilled hole, e.g. draw a circle if working on a milling face. This Geometry is
not always necessary.

Creating a New Hole Group:

1. In CAM mode choose the New Hole Group command from the Part Features
menu.

2. In the Hole Group Parameters Dialog set your Parameters accordingly. Most likely
you will not have a Thru Hole, set the Diameter for the Broach, and set the Type to
Drill.
3. Set the Depth Field to the Finish Depth for the Broach. Set the To: Field to Bottom
of Major Tool.

4. Click the Cycles Button and choose the Broach Cycle you made earlier.

At the Process Table:

1. Double Click on the Process for the Broach as shown below.

2. Check your Speeds and Feeds.
3. If you see Spindle Speed set to 0 then click on the Radio Button next to Units Per
Minute and enter the Feed-rate you require for your Broach, e.g. 15 as shown below
