3D Geometric Shapes and Forms

II. Definition
The shapes that are measured in three directions are called three-dimensional (3D) shapes.
These shapes are also called solid shapes. 3D shapes are measured by its length, width and
height (or depth, or thickness). They are different from 2D shapes because they have
thickness. 3D objects have properties like volume, surface area, number of faces, number of
edges, and number of vertices.
III. Kinds of 3D shapes
a. Cylinder - The two flat ends of a cylinder are circles. The flat ends are connected by a
curved surface.
b. Cuboid - A prism with rectangular bases. There are six faces. All faces meet at 90
degrees. Opposite faces are parallel.
c. Cube - A cube is a 3D shape with 6 faces. Each face of a cube is a square. This means all
the edges of a cube are the same length.
d. Pyramid - The base of a pyramid can be any straight sided shape like squares, rectangles
or triangles. The other faces are triangles that meet at a point at the top.
e. Cone – The base of the cone is a circle.
