About PGCE Computer Science with ICT Degrees

Leeds Trinity University offers Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) (FHEQ Level 6) initial teacher training courses in a number of subject areas as well as the
option to study for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification (PGCert) (FHEQ Level 7).

Structure

The course comprises of 3 stages, each lasting


12 weeks:

STAGE 1
In stage 1 trainees are based in the lead school
where they are taught the theoretical side
of teaching by the Lead tutor. This includes
how to plan lessons, units of work, classroom
management techniques, assessment methods
and much more.

STAGES 2 & 3
The 2 teaching placements are completed
in different schools and allow trainee’s to
experience what it is like to be a full time teacher
in a secondary school. The placements are at a
reduced timetable, compared to fully qualified
teachers, but the timetable increases as the
placements goes on to get you prepared for your
first teaching post.

Stage 1: content
During stage one the focus is on the trainee’s ability to understand how to prepare and complete the paperwork side of any teaching role.

We also help trainees assess their strengths and weaknesses in order to provide individual and tailor made provision.

Summary of the main aspects of Stage 1:

• Subject knowledge – What do you know? What do you need to improve on?
• Lesson and Unit Planning – How do you set it out? What do you need to include? What kind of activities should you use? How do children learn?
• Professionalism – What is expected of you? What other roles do teachers have?
• Assessment techniques – How do you know what the students have learnt? What is a mark scheme? What are the best ways to examine?
• Classroom management – How do you motivate and encourage students? How do you deal with difficult students?
• General teaching knowledge – New initiatives and understanding education language and key terms.

Prerequisites

Experience of teaching others, including young people /children


• Degree or higher in a relevant subject (ICT)
• C grade GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths
• Good communication skills
• A pleasant and interesting personality

To teach in secondary schools it is important that trainees have an up to date knowledge of the curriculum and software packages used in schools. These include:
• Basic office packages including word processing, spreadsheets, databases,
presentation software and Desktop publishing.
• Website design software
• Graphics editing software
• General use of internet browsers
• Email programs
• Other general common multi use software

Application Procedure

Applications for PGCE courses are through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR)at www.gttr.ac.uk

All the help you need is on the site, but if you are still on your degree course at university or college, advice will be available from your tutor or a careers advisor.
As part of the process, you pay for the application online using a credit card or debit card. You should also be aware that you will need to provide details of your referee (who
must be able to supply a reference electronically).
